BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Wellesley College junior Maddie Whitaker was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending October 2, 2011.
Whitaker was a key defender in Wellesley's 2-1 week, which included wins over Wheaton and Springfield. The junior led a Blue defense that allowed no first half shots in either conference game. Overall, Wellesley's defense allowed only 10 shots combined in two NEWMAC wins.
Whitaker's teammate, Nathalie Gruet, earned Offensive Player of the Week honors, as well, marking the third weekly honor for the Blue this season.
Wellesley field hockey is back in action a week from today, hosting Trinity in a 12:00pm non-conference tilt.
