WELLESLEY, Mass. – Seniors Haley Chrobock (Branchville, N.J.) and Paige Hauke (Colchester, Vt.) each scored as Wellesley College field hockey celebrated Senior Day with a 3-0 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Wheaton College on Sunday at the Wellesley Fields Complex.
The Blue, who also got a goal and an assist from sophomore Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.), close out the 2018 season with a record of 7-10 overall (3-5 NEWMAC). Wheaton ends the year at 5-10 (1-7 NEWMAC).
Chrobock scored her team-leading ninth of the season at 14:08, giving the Blue a 1-0 lead when she deposited the ball at the left post following a feed from Dennis. Dennis doubled the Wellesley lead at 30:06, when classmate Maggie King (Philadelphia, Pa.) found her during a scrum in front of the cage. The Blue finished the half with a 6-2 lead in shots and a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard.
The Blue limited the Lyons to just two more shots in the second half, finishing the game with a 9-4 edge. With under a minute left in regulation, Hauke found the back of the cage for the first time in her Wellesley career when classmate Cecie Negron (Midlothian, Va.) fired a pass from the top of the circle to the left post. Hauke finished on the play to make the score 3-0.
Wellesley ended the game with a 6-0 edge in penalty corner chances. Sophomore goalkeeper Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, Pa.) made one stop to earn her second career shutout. In the Wheaton cage, junior Morgan Karnes (Durham, Maine) finished with three saves in the setback.
Wellesley recognized Chrobock, Hauke, Negron and fellow seniors Maggie Connelly (Duxbury, Mass.), Rachel Hwang (Campbell, Calif.), and Arielle Mitropoulos (Cambridge, Mass.) prior to the contest. Today's win was the 42nd in four years for the Blue's senior class.
