Wellesley Fencing Defeats UMass, UNH at Northeast Conference Meet

DURHAM, N.H. -- The Wellesley College fencing team picked up two wins this weekend, while suffering four losses, competing at the first Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season. Competing at UNH, the Blue picked up wins over the hosts, as well as against UMass, while falling to Sacred Heart, MIT, Brown and Brandeis.

Wellesley's record at the meet sets its season mark to 6-6 overall.

The Blue's foil squad posted a 4-2 record at the event, defeating MIT, UMass, UNH and Brandeis. Their only losses game to Sacred Heart and Brown, both 6-3 defeats. Both sabre and epee picked up wins against UNH, with sabre narrowly pulling out a win against Brandeis, before falling 5-4.

Individually, Wellesley first-year foilist Carla The again led the Blue, posting a 15-3 record. She dropped just three bouts the entire day, while going 3-0 against MIT, UMass and UNH. First-years Oleander Furman and Olivia Wei also fared well in foil, with Furman notching eight victories and Wei adding six. 

In sabre, sophomore Dania Wright led the Blue with seven victories, while senior Zsofia Schweger picked up five wins. Rounding out the individual highlights, first-year Amanda Hui won six bouts to lead the epee team. 

Blue fencing is off until Janury 25, 2012, when they host Brandeis in a dual meet beginning at 7:00pm.
