NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Leah Clement's NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase highlighted Wellesley College track competing at the 2011 New England Intercollegiate Track & Field Championships. The event, a championship meet for Division I, II and III colleges and universities from the six New England states, was held at Southern Connecticut State University.
Clement broke her own program record in the steeplechase, running the event in a time of 10:41.09. Her time placed her second overall, first among Division III runners, and it automatically qualified her for the upcoming NCAA Championships.
Also competing for the Blue, Randelle Boots finished second overall in the 1,500-meter run, posting a time of 4:30.35. Boots and Clement were both named to the 2011 Intercollegiate All-New England team.
Wellesley's Camille Basurto, Cristina Lucas and Jami-Lin Williams also competed at the event. Basurto took 12th place in the 5,000-meter run in 18:12.13, while Lucas took second in her heat of the 1,500-meter run, with her time of 4:45.96 placing her 17th overall. Finally, Williams placed 25th overall in the 10,000-meter run, with her time of 42:55.58 giving her a new personal best.
In the team scoring, Wellesley recorded 16 points, putting the Blue in a tie for 15th place out of 32 scoring schools.
Up next for Wellesley, qualified athletes will be participating in the 2011 ECAC Championships at Moravian next weekend.
