BOSTON, Mass. -- The Wellesley College track and field team opened the 2011-12 season on a high note, posting five New England Championship qualifying times and two top-five finishes at the Jay Carisella Indoor Track & Field Invitational. The event, hosted by Northeastern University, was held at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center on Saturday.
Leading the way for Wellesley were junior Randelle Boots and senior Molly Shanley, who each recorded podium finishes at the event. Boots was the top collegiate finisher in the mile run, taking second place overall in 5:01.31, just three-tenths of a second behind the leader. Shanley finished fifth in the 5,000-meter run, clocking in at 18:05.60, which stands as a personal best, as well as the third best 5,000m time in Wellesley history. Both Boots and Shanley qualified for the New England Div. III, New England Intercollegiate and ECAC Div. III Championships with their performances.
Recording top-10 finishes for Wellesley were junior Eden Bass and senior Cailey Stevens. Bass and Stevens both competed in the 800-meter event, hitting New England Division III qualifying times in the process. Bass recorded a personal best time of 2:23.56 to take seventh place, while Stevens recorded a time of 2:28.18 to finish 10th.
Also hitting New England Div. III and ECAC Div. III qualifying standards was junior Ada Smith. Competing in the 5000-meter race, she posted a time of 18:31.27, a new personal best.
Other meet highlights for Wellesley included an 11th place finish from sophomore Jane Lodwick in the mile (5:31.33), while the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Stevens, Lodwick, Bass and sophomore Sarah Roundy, finished 13th overall in 4:31.61.
Rounding out the action for Wellesley, first-years Alexandra Dunn, Nicole Chui and Vanessa Wilkins all recorded solid starts to their track careers. Dunn won section three of the mile run, finishing 17th overall in 5:42.33, while Chui placed 18th overall in 5:43.36. Competing in her first 3000-meter race, Wilkins finished 14th overall in 11:02.09.
Wellesley track and field returns to action on January 27th, 2012, competing at Boston University's Terrier Invitational.
