Blue Volleyball Splits Two at Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Wellesley College volleyball team split two matches on the first night of the Brandeis Invitational. The Blue opened with a 3-1 win over Eastern Connecticut State, but dropped their nightcap, 3-1, to Haverford.

Against Eastern, the Blue came away with a 25-18, 21-25, 25-17, 25-13 match victory. Julia Adams was the star of the show, recording 12 kills on 23 attempts, without committing an error. The sophomore hit at a .521 clip, while also recording two blocks. 

Also for Wellesley, Hilary Ayers recorded a career-high of 22 assists, splitting setting duties with Isabel Custodio (16 assists). Amanda Duritsch and Custodio each recorded nine kills, while Tracy Hamanaka and Vivian Hu combined for 29 digs.

In their second match of the night, the Blue dropped a 3-1 decision at the hands of Haverford. The Fords opened the match with a 25-16 set one victory, but the Blue rebounded even the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 second set win. Haverford, however, took the final two sets, 25-13, 26-14, to take the match, 3-1.

Kellyn O'Brady tallied a season-high 10 kills to lead Wellesley against the Fords. Caitlin Laughlin picked up nine kills, while Custodio dished out 21 assists. Rounding out the stat leaders, Hamanaka picked up 16 digs.

Wellesley finishes out the Brandeis Tournament tomorrow at 4:00pm, taking on Emmanuel in Shapiro Gym C.
