CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Wellesley College volleyball team suffered two tough losses on day one of the MIT Invitational. The Blue fell 3-1 to Connecticut College in their opener, and then dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to Frostburg State in the nightcap.
In a 3-1 loss to Conn., the Blue took the opening set 25-23, but couldn't hold the momentum, dropping the final three sets, 25-20, 25-21 and 25-11. Sydney Carfagno and Caitlin Laughlin led the Blue with nine and eight kills, respectively. Vivian Hu tallied 21 digs, while Isabel Custodio distributed 30 assists in the loss.
Against Frostburg State, Wellesley jumped out two a 2-0 lead, winning the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-18. However, the Blue couldn't close out the victory, dropping the final three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-22 and 17-15. Kellyn O'Brady led the Blue with a career-high 20 kills, while Carfagno added 13. Hu once again paced the Blue on the backrow, recording 20 digs, while Custodio notched 56 assists, also a career-high.
The MIT Invitational continues tomorrow at 10:00am where Wellesley will face Newbury College in the Bronze bracket semifinals. A win would send the Blue to the Bronze final at 2pm, while a loss would put them in the consolation game, also played at 2:00pm.
