Blue Volleyball Goes 2-1 at Hall of Fame Tournament
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Backed by All-Tournament selection Traci Hamanaka, the Wellesley College volleyball team posted a 2-1 record against tough competition at the 2011 Volleyball Hall of Fame Tournament.
The Blue opened the tournament on Friday with a hard-fought 3-1 (25-21, 25-18, 13-25, 25-20) loss to regionally-ranked Middlebury. On Saturday, the Blue rebounded with a 3-2 (13-25, 25-17, 14-25, 25-13, 15-8) victory over Williams and a 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 35-33) sweep of regionally-ranked Amherst.
Against Middlebury, Wellesley was led by first-year Sydney Carfagno who recorded 12 kills, five digs and two blocks. Megan Mills and Caitlin Laughlin notched eight kills each, while adding totals of three and two blocks. Hamanaka and Julia Adams combined for 29 digs, with Isabel Custodio recording 33 assists and two blocks.
In the five-set win over Williams, Carfagno led the way with a 13-kill, 16-dig, two-block performance, tallying a career high in digs. Mills also had a fantastic game, talling 11 kills with a career-high total of seven blocks. Rounding out the stat leaders, Custodio dished out 31 assists, while Hamanaka added 25 digs.
Wrapping up the tournament against Amherst, Carfagno led the Blue with 20 kills, 13 digs, three blocks and two aces. Kellyn O'Brady had a solid game with 10 kills, five digs and five blocks, while Laughlin totaled nine kills. Amanda Duritsch played well, recording six kills and seven blocks, while Custodio distrubuted 43 assists. Also for the Blue, Hamanaka and Vivian Hu each recorded 16 digs.
Hamanaka was Wellesley's representative on the All-Tournament team, recording 57 digs in three matches, averaging 4.75 digs per set.
Wellesley (20-7 overall) is back in action on Tuesday hosting Coast Guard in a key NEWMAC match-up at 7:00pm.
