Blue XC Takes 2nd at Seven Sisters; Cowles Runs to Individual Title

MEDIA, Pa. -- Wellesley College cross country sophomore Grace Cowles (Yarmouth, Maine) ran to the individual title to help the Blue take second place at the 2018 Seven Sisters Championship on Sunday afternoon at Rose Tree Park.

Cowles finished the 6k course with a time of 23:06.0 to become the eighth individual Seven Sisters champion in Blue program history. Cowles is also the fourth individual champion for the Blue in the last five years, joining Priyanka Fouda '16 (2014, 2015) and Isabella King '18 (2017).

Vassar College took six of the top ten spots, led by a runner-up performance of 23:12.8 from sophomore Hannah Martin (Fort Wayne, Ind.), to win Sunday's team championship with a score of 30. The championship is the second consecutive for the Brewers and the fifth in program history. 

The Blue finished second (49), followed by Smith in third (81), Mount Holyoke in fourth (106), St. Catherine in fifth (116), and host Bryn Mawr in sixth (167).

First year Maya Bradbury (Freeport, Maine) also posted a top-five finish to earn All-Seven Sisters honors for the Blue, taking fifth place with a time of 23:24. Junior Taylor Mahlandt (Ephrata, Pa.) and sophomore Ava Shipman (Makawao, Hawaii) joined Cowles and Bradbury on the All-Seven Sisters squad. Mahlandt captured 13th in 23:57.4, while Shipman finished just behind her teammate in 14th with a time of 23:58.0.

First year Ariana Marks (Eagle Point, Ore.) rounded out the Wellesley team score in 17th with a time of 24:06.5. Sophomores April Chu (Fremont, Calif.) and Samara Shaz (New York, N.Y.) followed in 29th (24:40.7) and 30th (24:44.4), respectively. In all, ten Wellesley runners finished in the top-50 in the field of 93, as junior Keiko Hilmo (Saint Paul, Minn.) was 40th (25:14.3), junior Sophie Dolan (Austin, Texas) was 44th (25:30.9), and senior Catherine Xie (Newton, Mass.) was 47th (25:49.2). 

Also in action for the Blue, first year Jenna Ocheltree (Libertyville, Ill.) was 51st (26:07.4), sophomore Hannah Russo (Summit, N.J.) ran to 58th (26:28.4), sophomore Carolyn Price (Koloa, Hawaii) took 59th (26:29.9), and sophomore Veda Donthireddy (Princeton Junction, N.J.) finished 74th (27:37.2).

Wellesley continues the season on Sunday, October 27, at the 2018 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships in Northampton, Mass.
