WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College squash team fell
to Smith College, 7-2, in the season opener for both teams, held on
Saturday afternoon at Dana Hall School in Wellesley.
The Blue started strong with wins from their senior captains at
number one and number two. Sarah
Odell (Chester Springs, PA) was an 11-5,
11-1, 11-2 winner over Meg Oliverio (Boston, MA) at one,
while Ashley
Stevens (East Harwich, MA) won her second
position match 11-6, 11-8, 11-4 over Joanne Poon (San Francisco,
CA).
Smith turned the table beginning with the third position where
Alice Reznickova (Kromeriz, Czech Republic) won a hard-fought 11-8,
4-11, 11-6, 9-11, 12-10 win over Wellesley's Ally
Ewing (Philadelphia, PA).
From that point on, Smith swept the fourth through ninth
positions. Elizabeth Guyman (Seattle, WA), Kelsey Radwilowicz
(Belchertown, MA), Catie Blunt (Needham, MA), Clair Oblamski (Elm
Grove, WI), Su Fu (Beijing, China) and XiZhu Zhao (Beijing, China)
were all winners for the Pioneers, giving the visitors the 7-2
victory.
Closing out the action, Wellesley's Jess
Whitley (Yeadon, PA) won both exhibition matches,
winning a marathon over Elena Plesco (Chisinau, Moldova), 11-5,
11-6, 6-11, 7-11, 12-10, and then beating Ashleigh King (Enfield,
NH) in straight sets.
Wellesley returns to action on Friday, November
13th hosting Northeastern University at 7:00pm at Dana Hall. Smith
is back on the court at 10:00am on November 14th, also hosting
Northeastern.
