Wellesley College Swimming & Diving Defeats Rival Smith College

Leading the way for the Blue, fifth-year Savanna Johnson (Bloomington, IL), senior Emilie Mitten (Norwalk, CT), and first-year Carolyn Jackson (Leesburg, VA) all posted two individual swimming victories.  Johnson won the 50-free (25.55) and the 100-free (57.85), Mitten placed first in the both the 200-free (2:04.47) and the 500-free (5:33.47), while Jackson was a winner in the 100-breast (1:12.57) and the 200-breast (2:45.05).

Wellesley also got individual swimming wins from junior Dana Dutton (Anacortes, WA) and first-year Virginia Hung (Plainsboro, NJ).  Dutton got her victory in the 1,000-free (11:19.51) and also took second on both the 50-free (26.08) and the 100-free (58.25).  Hung was a winner in the 100-fly (1:01.45) and took second place in the 200-free (2:05.90).

Also swimming strong for the Blue were senior Hilary Gram (Hopkinton, MA), sophomore Whitney Smith (Detroit, MI), and first-years Katherine Foley (Orono, ME) and Maia Fitzstevens (Rochester, NY).  Gram took second in the 200-fly (2:20.59), Smith placed second in the 200-free (2:06.55), Foley finished second in the 100-back (1:07.22) and Fitzstevens touched second in both the 100-breast (1:17.10) and the 200-breast (2:46.98).

Smith was paced by junior Lily Seidman (Westfield, IN) who picked up wins in the 200-fly (2:19.54) and the 200-back (2:18.52), while also taking second place in the 100-fly in 1:01.94. 

The Pioneers also saw solid performances from sophomore Alexandra Page (Brookline, MA) and first-year Mackenzie Bradley (Sherwood, OR).  Page won the 100-back (1:06.46) and took second place in the 200-back (2:22.61), while Bradley notched second-place finishes in the 500-free (11:27.13) and the 1,000-free (11:27.13).

Wellesley and Smith split the diving events.  The Blue got the win on the 3-meter board, as first-year Kathryn Goffin (Falmouth, ME) recorded a score of 200.75, her career-best.  Smith first-year Isabelle Harper (South Deerfield, MA) placed a close second on the 3-meter, while winning the 1-meter with a score of 190.10.

Wellesley touched the wall first in both relay events.  In the 200-medley relay, the Blue team of Foley, Jackson, Hung and Johnson won with a time of 1:58.29, while the team of sophomore Stephanie Welch (Dedham, MA), Gram, sophomore Olivia Hulme (Alma, MI), and Smith finished second in 2:03.40.  Wellesley recorded the fastest time in the 200-free relay, as Johnson, Smith, Mitten and Dutton finished in 1:45.74, while the Smith team of senior Christine Dzialo (Belchertown, MA), Seidman, senior Rachel Dorset (Stratford, CT) and first-year Rachael Gainer (Atlanta, GA) took second in 1:48.73.

Wellesley and Smith both head to the Seven Sisters Championships for their next meet.  Hosted by Mount Holyoke, the event runs Saturday and Sunday, January 23rd and 24th.  Action begins at 10:00am on both days.
