WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College squash team kicked off the 2010-11 season in winning fashion, as the Blue defeated Boston College 7-2 on Friday night at Dana Hall.
Thanks to solid play up and down the ladder, Wellesley took all but the #2 and the #9 matches, en route to the 7-2 team victory. Each of the Blue's 10 players won at least a game in the hard-fought win.
In the first flight, Rosemary O'Connor (pictured) posted a convincing 12-10, 11-4, 11-4 victory over BC #1, Chapin Duke. At two, Emma Haley fell in a five-game marathon match, 5-11, 11-6, 11-9, 3-11, 11-7. Dorothy Vickery rebounded from an 0-2 deficit to take her third flight match, 9-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-9.
At the middle of the ladder, Cara Kaufman was a 2-11, 11-7, 2-11, 11-3, 11-7 winner in the fourth spot, Allie Ewing won the clinching match at five, 11-3, 11-5, 10-12, 7-11, 14-12, and Emaline Surgenor posted an 11-8, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7 victory in the sixth flight.
Rounding out the line-up, Margot Sulmont allowed just five points against her in a 11-0, 11-4, 11-1 victory at seven, while Jennifer Hsu also swept her opponent, taking the eighth flight 11-2, 11-5, 11-5. Haley Vasquez fell in a tough 11-4, 11-13, 11-7, 11-3 match in the ninth spot, while Charlene Lee narrowly lost her exhibition match, 5-11, 2-11, 13-11, 11-7, 12-10.
Wellesley (1-0) is back in action tomorrow morning, taking on Haverford at 9:00am at Dana Hall. The Blue then get a few hours rest before battling Smith at 4:00pm, also at Dana Hall.
