WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College squash team continued its winning ways on Saturday with victories over Haverford (9-0) and Smith (5-4) at the Dana Hall Courts.
The wins over Haverford and Smith improve Wellesley to 3-0 on the young season.
Against Haverford, the Blue cruised to a 9-0 team victory. Wellesley only dropped one game the entire match, and four Wellesley players held their Haverford opponents to under ten points in their three-game wins. At two, Emma Haley (pictured) was an easy 11-2, 11-3, 11-4 winner, while at five Ally Ewing posted an 11-4, 11-3, 11-2 win. In the seventh position, Margo Sulmont cruised to an 11-2, 11-0, 11-2 victory, while at nine, Haley Vasquez won 11-3, 11-5, 11-0.
The premiere match of the day came when Wellesley battled Seven Sisters rival, Smith College. With four matches complete, the team score was knotted at 2-2, as Wellesley picked up wins from Dorothy Vickery at three (17-19, 11-4, 13-11, 10-12, 12-10) and Jennifer Hsu at eight (11-6, 11-9, 11-8).
Smith then picked up two straight wins to go ahead 4-2, needing just one victory to seal the match.
Facing a two-point deficit, Wellesley picked up wins from Sulmont in the seventh spot (11-4, 11-5, 11-6) and Haley in the second spot (11-8, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5) to tie the match at 4-4. The tie meant the team result was in the hands of the evening's final match, the #1 flight featuring Wellesley's Rosemary O'Connor and Smith's Margaret Oliverio.
In the night's clinching match, the Blue's O'Connor posted a convincing 11-5, 11-5, 11-6 victory over Smith's Oliverio, to give the 5-4 match to Wellesley.
The Blue have one more match this weekend, as they face Northeastern University tomorrow on the road at 3:00pm.
