WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Visiting Tufts University topped Wellesley College by a score of 6-3 in Thursday night squash action played at Dana Hall School in Wellesley. The Jumbos, ranked 24th in the latest CSA poll, even their record to 3-3, while #28 Wellesley falls to 4-5.
Although Wellesley picked up wins in the seventh, eighth and ninth positions, the Blue could not overcome a Tufts sweep of the first six spots.
Tufts took a 2-1 lead after the first rotation, as the Jumbos picked up three-game wins from Mercedes Barba at three and Ushashi Basu at six. Wellesley got on the board with a victory from Haley Vasquez in the ninth position.
Wellesley's Jennifer Hsu then knotted the match at 2-2 with a victory in the eighth spot to open the second rotation of matches. However, Tufts then rattled off wins from #2 Valerie Koo and #5 Alyse Vinosky to take a 4-2 lead.
In the final rotation, Tufts got a quick win at four from Jessica Rubine to seal the match. Rubine allowed her opponent just three total points in the clincher. Wellesley later got its third win of the match, as Emaline Surgenor picked up a four-game win in the seventh spot to set the score to 5-3.
In the final match of the evening, Wellesley's Rosemary O'Connor and Tufts' Alix Michael battled it out for five games in an exciting finish in the #1 position. Michael won the marathon match to set the final to 6-3 in favor of the Jumbos, with game scores of 17-15, 11-9, 8-11, 4-11, 11-6.
Tufts returns to action tomorrow night with a trip to Wesleyan. Wellesley also plays at Wesleyan next, traveling to the Wesleyan Round Robin this weekend.
