CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Backed by three New England Champions, the Wellesley College track team notched an eighth place finish at the 2011 New England Division III Track and Field Championships.
Wellesley junior Leah Clement led the way, picking up first place finishes in both the 600 and the 1000 meters. Clement broke the New England Championship record, as well as the MIT facility and Wellesley program records, with her time of 1:35.36 in the 600. Later in the meet, she recorded a winning time of 2:58.72 in the 1000 meter run.
Blue sophomore Randelle Boots also took home one of Wellesley's three New England titles. Boots ran to a first place finish in the 800 meters, recording a time of 2:16.19.
Also earning All-New England honors were first-year Adiba Manning and the 4x400 relay team of Manning, sophomore Cristina Lucas, Boots and Clement. Manning took eighth place in the 600 meter run, clocking a time of 1:40.16. In the 4x400 relay, the Blue won their section in 4:11.87, placing seventh overall.
Overall, Wellesley totaled 34 points at the event, narrowly finishing behind NESCAC-foe Amherst (36) and NEWMAC-rival Springfield (35). Williams took home the team title with a score of 141, while MIT (137) and Tufts (78) rounded out the top three.
The Blue will be back in action at next weekend's New England Intercollegiate Championships with qualified athletes competing at Boston University.
