PRINCETON, N.J. - The Wellesley College squash team wrapped up play at the 2011 College Squash Association National Championships with a tight 6-3 loss to Smith College. The result places the Blue third in the Epps Cupp "D" Division and 28th overall.
The story of the match, as well as the season, was strong play atop the line-up for the Blue. First-years Rosemary O'Connor and Emma Haley each went undefeated at the Championship, and today, both posted 3-0 victories. At one, O'Connor breezed by Margaret Oliverio, 11-5, 11-4, 11-5, while Haley defeated Jasmine Wallas, 11-2, 11-8, 11-8 at two.
Wellesley picked up its other win in the eighth spot, where Cara Kaufman was a 14-12, 13-11, 9-11, 11-4, over Smith's Elena Pleseco.
Although the match ended 6-3 in favor of Smith, several matches went into the fifth game, making it much closer than the final score indicates.
At three, Dorothy Vickery battled in a five-game match with Helen Queenan before narrowly falling 14-12, 5-11, 11-2, 4-11, 11-6. At four, Margot Sulmont lost a tight 11-7, 6-11, 11-13, 11-7, 11-9 match to Eunice Zhao. Finally, Haley Vasquez was tough in the seven spot, but fell to Catie Blunt, 6-11, 11-2, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9.
O'Connor ended her dual meet season on a ten-match win streak, including winning 14 out of her final 16 matches. Haley also ended the season strong, winning eight out of her last 10 matches, including victories in her final five.
Up next for the Blue, selected athletes will compete in the 2011 College Squash Association Individual Championships at Dartmouth on March 4th, 5th and 6th.
