COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Wellesley College sophomore Randelle Boots became the school's second National Champion, winning the mile run at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The event was hosted by Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.
Boots, a Seekonk, Mass., native eclipsed the field with a time of 4:57.46, over a second faster than her nearest competitor. "I stayed on the leader, it was a really tight pack, with a really challenging field, but in the last lap, instincts kicked in and I just booked it," said Boots.
Boots joins Karyn Cooper '92, who won the 1991 NCAA Tennis Singles Championship, as the school's only other national title winner.
In addition to her title and her All-American status this year, Boots owns All-American honors in cross country (2010) and in last year's mile (3rd place).
"Last year was my first year running track, I played basketball and lacrosse in high school," said Boots of her future. "I'm excited to grow, I'm excited to get faster and stronger."
Wellesley junior Leah Clement also had a strong showing, taking sixth place in the 800m to earn her first career All-American honors. She finished the race in a time of 2:14.0.
As a two-woman team, Wellesley placed 11th overall in the team scoring. The Blue, in their first year as a varsity program, were just three points off of a top-10 team finish with 13 points overall. Wisconsin Oshkosh took the team title with 46.5 points, while Wartburg placed second with 44.
A welcome back to campus celebration will be held on Sunday at 2:30pm in Wellesley College's Tishman Commons.
