Blue Open Outdoor Track Season at Fitchburg

FITSCHBURG, Mass. -- The Wellesley College track team opened the outdoor season with a solid performace at Fitchburg State's Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational. The Blue posted four wins and three New England qualifiers in Wellesley's first outdoor competition as a varsity program.

Sophomore Randelle Boots posted two individual wins, while junior Leah Clement added a third. Wellesley also picked up a relay victory to finish with 90 total points and fourth place in the 10-team field, despite only competing in 10 of 20 events. UMass-Lowell took first with 124 points, followed by Keene State with 122 and host Fitchburg State with 115.

Boots won the 1500m in 4:38.03, the third best time in Division III this season. Her time qualified her for the New England Division III and ECAC Championships. Boots also notched an individual win in the 800m, recording a New England qualifying time of 2:20.59.

Clement picked up a victory in the 400m dash, posting a time of 58.47, beating her old personal best/school record and qualifying her for the New England and ECAC Championships. She also won her heat and took fourth overall in the 200m dash in 27.67.

Boots and Clement then teamed up with Katie Shulenberger and Cristina Lucas to post a first place finish in the 4x400m relay event, finishing the race in 4:11.05.

Also for the Blue, Shulenberger recorded a second place finish in the 400m hurdles and also anchored a second place relay team, in her first meet as a varsity track athlete. In the hurdles, she posted a New England qualifying time of 69.55 to take second. In the 4x100m relay, Shulenberger teamed with Judine St. Gerard, Alexis Puccetti and Sheena Dupuy to take second in a time of 55.19.

Sophomore Cristina Lucas also had a strong meet, taking fourth in the 800m in 2:27.46, and finishing third in the 1500m in 4:45.82. Boots and Lucas were two of four top-10 finishers in the 1500m event for the Blue, as Camille Basurto took sixth in 5:02.87 and Margaret Wehner took 10th in 5:11.33.

Rounding out the highlights for the Blue were Zoe Sobel and Sheena Dupuy each taking first in their heats of the 100m and then competing in the first jumping events for Wellesley. Soebel recorded a time of 14.90 in the 100, finishing first in her heat and ninth overall. Dupuy finished in 14.75, first in her heat and seventh overall. In the long jump, Soebel placed sixth (14' 2.25") and Dupuy took seventh (12' 8.75").

Wellesley will next compete at the at UMass Lowell Invitational on Saturday.
