CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Wellesley College track team fought delays for rain, thunder and lightning, competing at the 2011 New England Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by MIT on Saturday. Competing in just four events, the Blue finished 16th out of 29 scoring teams.
Highlighting the trip for the Blue, junior Leah Clement took second place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, posting a time of 11:00.38. Her finish earned her All-New England honors for the fourth time in her career.
In the 1,500-meter race, Wellesley's Cristina Lucas narrowly missed All-New England honors, taking ninth overall in 4:47.27. Camille Basurto also had a strong showing in the event, placing 14th overall in a time of 4:56.93.
Rounding out the individual events, Katie Shulenberger topped her previous school record in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing sixth in her section with a time of 1:07.89.
Wellesley's 4x100m relay team wrapped things up with a fifth place finish in their section. The Blue's Alexis Puccetti, Eden Bass, Sheena Dupuy, and Shulenberger, combined for a time of 52.48, surpassing the previous school record of 52.5 set in 1988 (Barnes, Morrison, Hawkins, O'Dowd.)
Wellesley athletes will next race at the New England Intercollegiate Championships at Southern Connecticut State University on May 14th.
