CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Wellesley College swimming and diving team broke three program records, while sophomore Keelin Nave earned All-Conference honors, as the Blue competed on day one of the 2012 NEWMAC Championships.
With six events completed, Wellesley has racked up 128 total points, ranking fourth overall and just half of a point off of third place Coast Guard. Defending Champion MIT leads the field with 323 points, while Springfield is second with 256 points.
Leading the way for the Blue, Nave earned All-Conference honors in the 500-freestyle. She took second overall in a school-record time of 5:04.33, missing an NCAA "B" cut by .01 and breaking her own school record of 5:04.88 set last year. Also earning points for Wellesley in the event, senior Olivia Hulme placed 14th in a time of 5:20.85, while first-year Grace Bachman took 16th in 5:25.99.
Sophomore Hayley Goydan finished in third place overall in 1-meter diving, recording a career-best and NCAA consideration score of 448.10. She finished behind only Springfield's Jennifer Thompson (474.10) and Clark's Eileen Garcia (460.10), both NCAA qualifiers last season. Rounding out the individual performances on day one, senior Stephanie Welch took 11th overall in the 200-IM, finishing in a time of 2:16.48.
Also setting a new Wellesley record, the 400-medley relay team of sophomore Emma Mrkonic, first-year Kendra Waters, Nave, and first-year Monica Gates combined for a time of 4:00.08, shattering the previous record of 4:04.62 set in 2007 (Saint-Amour, Wu, Gram, Johnson). As part of the relay, Mrkonic also broke a school record in the 100-back, posting a time of 58.84, besting her own mark of 59.93 set at last year's Championship. Wellelsey's A relay finished third overall, behind MIT and Springfield, while the B relay team of first-year Veronica Lin and sophomores Anne Hamilton, Gabriela Kovacikova and Mariam Amirkhanashvili, took 13th in 4:06.71.
In the other relay event of the night, Amirkhanashvili, Waters, Gates and Mrkonic combined for a 1:39.88 to place fifth overall. Sophomore Megan Lambert, Kovacikova, Hamilton and Welch swam a 1:42.80 to finish 13th.
