CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Three more school records were broken, while sophomore Emma Mrkonic attained All-Conference distinction as the Wellesley College swimming and diving team competed on day two of the 2012 NEWMAC Championships on Saturday at MIT. 

With 13 events in the books, the Blue's strong performances on day two moved the team up a spot in the rankings. Wellesley has now accumulated 283 team points, behind only MIT (681) and Springfield (544), in the 10-team field.

Mrkonic used a record-setting swim in the 100-back to earn the first All-Conference honors of her career. The sophomore swam a program record 57.98 in the preliminaries, surpassing her own record of 59.93 set last year. Mrkonic then swam a 58.25 in the finals, hitting an NCAA "B" cut and earning an All-Conference award. Also earning points for the Blue in the event, first-year Veronica Lin swam a 1:01.99 to finish in 12th place overall.

Sophomore Keelin Nave had another record setting day, taking third place in the 100-fly in an NCAA "B" cut time of 57.22. Shaving .39 seconds off of her own school record, Nave was one of three Wellesley scorers in the event. Sophomore Mariam Amirkhanashvili took 10th overall in 1:00.30, while first-year Monica Gates finished 13th in 1:01.33.

Wellesley first-year Kendra Waters and senior Stephanie Welch each advanced to the finals of their respective events, before finishing eighth overall. Waters swam the 100-breast in a time of 1:08.58, just half a second off of the school record of 1:08.08 (Carolyn Jackson - 2010). Welch led a trio of Blue scorers in the 400-IM, with a time of 4:47.94. Sophomore Anne Hamilton took 11th in 4:46.68, while first-year Tiffany Chen took 16th in 5:01.23. 

Rounding out the individual scorers for Wellesley, senior Olivia Hulme and sophomore Megan Lambert each earned points in the 200-free. Hulme finished 14th overall in 1:59.88, while Lambert's 2:01.37 put her in 15th place. 

In the day's relay events, Wellesley's "A" teams earned fourth place in both the 200-medley relay and the 800-free relay. The 200-medley team of Mrkonic, Waters, Nave and Gates surpassed a five-year-old program record, finishing in a time of 1:49.30. The team shaved nearly a second off the previous program mark of 1:50.81 (Saint-Amour, Wu, Johnson, O'Hara). Also in the medley relay, the team of Lin, and sophomores Lindsey Shepardson and Gabriela Kovacikova, and Lambert, took 15th in 1:55.42. 

Closing out the action, the Blue's 800-free relay of Nave, Lambert, Hulme and Welch took fourth in 7:58.60, missing a school record by just .45 seconds. Wellesley's other entry, comprised of Mrkonic, first-year Grace Bachman, Hamilton and Amirkhanashvili, took 13th overall in 8:03.28.

The 2012 NEWMAC Championships conclude tomorrow with preliminaries beginning at 11:00am and finals starting at 6:30pm.
