NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Wellesley College track and field team earned four All-NEWMAC spots to highlight competition at the 2012 NEWMAC Track and Field Championships, hosted by Smith College. The Blue, a second-year varsity program, finished sixth overall, competing at the event for just the second time.
Wellesley juniors Randelle Boots and Camille Basurto and senior Molly Shanley each earned All-NEWMAC honors at the event. Boots took home her first NEWMAC Track & Field title in the 1,500m race, recording a time of 4:43.79. She also took second in the 800m race in 2:21.08, earning her second All-Conference honor.
Basurto defended her title in the 5,000-meter event, recording a personal best time of 17:54.00. Also earning All-Conference honors in the event, Shanley finished second in a time of 17:56.52. Both times hit qualifying standards for the New England Intercollegiate and ECAC Div. III Championships. Wrapping up the 5,000m race (Wellesley's highest scoring event), sophomore Skye Roberts took eighth in 19:54.52.
In addition to the All-Conference selections, Wellesley's team was awarded the NEWMAC Sportsmanship trophy. Voted upon by the league's student-athletes, the award recognizes the team that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct.
In the 10,000m race, Wellesley recorded three top-10 finishes. First-year Vanessa Wilkins led the way with a New England Intercollegiate and ECAC Div. III Championships qualifying time of 39:53.97 to finish fourth. First-year Nicole Chui took sixth in 40:45.70, while sophomore Doris Berman took ninth place in 41:46.26.
Also scoring points for the Blue were first-year Taylor Bickford and senior Cailey Stevens. Bickford took sixth in the steeplechase, finishing in 12:34.45, while Stevens placed seventh in the 800m run in 2:22.95.
The Blue took sixth place in both relay events. In the 4x100m, first-year Sarah Chen, sophomore Zoe Sobel, sophomore Sheena Dupuy, and first-year Kathleen Hanlon teamed up to record a time of 54.05. In the 4x400m, first-year Monica Gates, Stevens, sophomore Jane Lodwick and Hanlon compiled a time of 4:19.80.
Also finishing in the top ten for the Blue, Hanlon took ninth place in the 400m dash in 1:02.64, while Lodwick placed ninth in the 1,500m race in 5:02.65.
Wrapping up the highlights for Wellesley, sophomore Margaret Wehner took 11th in the 1,500m, while first-years Chloe Emerson and Alexandra Dunn placed 12th and 14th in the 800. In addition, Chen, who competed in five events for the Blue, took 13th in the high jump and 15th in the 100-meter hurdles.
MIT took home the team title at the event, as the Engineers finished with 208 points for their fourth straight title and fifth in the last six years. Wheaton piled up 144 points to finish second, followed by Springfield in third with 107, and WPI fourth with 91.5. Hosts Smith came in fifth with 82.5, followed by Wellesley (56), Coast Guard (42), Babson (27), and Mount Holyoke (22).
Wellesley track and field is back in action at the New England Division III Championships, host by MIT on May 4th and 5th.
