Blue Swimming & Diving Tops Smith 192-105

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Wellesley College swimming and diving team picked up its third straight victory of 2013, notching a 192-105 dual meet win over host Smith College on Saturday afternoon. The Blue now hold a 6-2 record, while Smith evens its record to 2-2.

Wellesley touched first in 11 of the 14 swimming events, while sweeping the diving action. Smith picked up wins in three swimming events and had individuals rank second on both diving boards at the meet.

The Blue got two wins each from junior Hayley Goydan, and from first-years Ieva Galinyte, Emily Sotomayor and Charlotte Harris. Wellesley also won both relay events to cement the meet victory.

Goydan won both diving events for the second straight meet, recording a 247.0 on the 1-meter board, and a 262.65 on the 3-meter board, missing the NCAA qualifying standard on the 3-meter by less than three points. Sophomore Gabby Cooper-Vespa also performed well, finishing third on the 1-meter (212.20) and fourth on the 3-meter (209.70) board.

Galinyte was a winner in the 200-free in a time of 2:05.03, while also taking first in the 200-back in 2:21.00. Sotomayor picked up victories in the 100-breast (1:10.80) and the 200-IM (2:19.58), while Harris touched the wall first in both the 100-free (56.91) and the 200-breast (2:36.50).

Other individual winners for the Blue were juniors Mariam Amirkhanashvili and Gabriela Kovacikova, and first-year Dorothy Ren. Amirkhanashvili won the 100-back in 1:04.83, Kovacikova placed first in the 100-fly (1:02.46), and Ren touched first in the 50-free (25.46).

In the relay events, Wellesley picked up wins in both contested – the 200-medley relay and the 400-free relay. In the medley relay, Kovacikova, Sotomayor, Ren and Galinyte teamed up to record a 1:55.57, while in the free, sophomore Monica Gates, first-year Theresa Mitchell, junior Anne Hamilton, and senior Karina Chung, combined for a 3:53.72.

Wellesley swimming and diving is back in action on Saturday and Sunday, January 19th and 20th, hosting the 2013 Seven Sisters Swimming and Diving Championships
