Four Wins, Four Qualifying Standards Highlight Track & Field Weekend Action

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wellesley College track and field team competed at two events this weekend, taking part in the Boston University Terrier Invitational on Friday and the MIT Coed Invitational on Saturday. Overall, Wellesley recorded four first place finishes and hit qualifying standards in three events.

At BU, Wellesley athletes competed in four events, led by seniors Randelle Boots and Cristina Lucas. Boots was the second Division III finisher in the race (20th overall), recording a time of 5:03.39 to qualify for the New England Division III, New England Intercollegiate and ECAC Championships. Lucas placed first in her section of the 1,000m, with her time of 3:07.36 ranking her 17th overall and qualifying her to compete at the New England Division III and ECAC Championships.

Other competitors at BU included first-years Sharon Ng, Alessandra Gavin and Courtney Lang. Ng recorded a personal best indoor time of 2:23.98 to finish third in her section of the 800m, while Gavin recorded a personal best time of 5:27.8 to finish sixth in her section of the mile. Lang competed in the triple jump, recording an effort of 10.05m (32' 11.75").

The Blue sent 12 competitors to MIT on Saturday, coming away with four wins at the Co-Ed Invitational. Wellesley's four wins ranked them second to only Worcester State who totaled five victories at the event. MIT and Tufts each nabbed three wins to sit behind the Blue.

Individually, Boots and sophomore Vanessa Wilkins each tallied wins, while the Blue also picked up two relay victories. Boots won the 1,000m event, competing at the distance for the first time. She recorded a time of 3:06.77, which was enough for qualification to the New England Division III and ECAC Championships. Wilkins won the 3,000m race, finishing in a time of 11:03.52.

In the 4x400m relay, the Wellesley team of Ng, and fellow first-years Laura Brindley, Mia Guild and Emma Kissane won with a time of 4:27.52. The Blue edged out Fitchburg State in a back-and-forth race, with Kissane sealing the win in the home stretch. In the 4x800m relay, Wellesley's team of Lucas, Wilkins, Gavin and Boots, combined for a time of 10:10.61 in the victory, qualifying for the ECAC Championship.

In the remaining track events, Wellesley recorded 11 top-10 finishes, led by fourth place efforts from Ng, first-year Carolyn Chelius, Brindley, Kissane and junior Sheena Dupuy. Ng was fourth in the mile in 5:33.70, Chelius ranked fourth in the 600m in 1:54.22, Brindley raced to fourth in her first 800m race (2:37.32), and Kissane and Dupuy tied for fourth in the 200m (28.85).

Juniors Ali Grzywna and Sarah Roundy each placed sixth in their events, as Grzywna ran the 3,000m in 12:21.36 and Roundy finished the 600m in 1:59.07.  In the 60m dash, Kissane set a new Wellesley best, recording a time of 8.55 to place ninth, while Dupuy placed 10th with a personal best of 8.56.
