Blue Squash Avenges Earlier Loss; Wellesley Tops Boston College

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College squash team avenged an earlier season loss to Boston College, picking up a 7-2 victory over the Golden Eagles on Thursday evening at Dana Hall School in Wellesley. The win lifts the Blue to 4-12 overall, while BC falls to 3-6.

Wellesley came into the match ranked 26th in the latest College Squash Association (CSA) rankings, while Boston College ranked 23rd. The Blue, who were topped by BC 6-3 in November, will likely receive a boost in the rankings with tonight's victory.

Wellesley started strong, going up 3-0 after wins from junior Haley Vasquez, and seniors Emaline Surgenor and Cara Kaufman. Vasquez won at six (11-1, 11-3, 11-7), Surgenor won at seven (11-6, 11-8, 11-1) and Kaufman won at nine (11-3, 11-4, 11-2). Wellesley first-year Kate Loftus was also an early winner, taking her exhibition match 11-4, 11-1, 11-2.

Boston College got one back in the third spot, as Caroline Whelan topped Blue junior Sara Del Balzo in a marathon match. Del Balzo won the first two games 11-9, and 11-8, before Whelan tied the match with 11-8 and 13-11 victories. In the deciding game, Whelan came out on top, 11-8 to set the team score to 3-1, still in favor of Wellesley.

The teams then split matches, giving Wellesley a 4-2 edge. Blue senior Margo Sulmont won her match at five, 11-1, 11-7, 9-11, 11-5, while Boston College won at seven, where Caroline Kulig earned an 11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7 victory.

Wellesley got the match-clinching point in the second spot, as first-year Gabriella Wynne came away with a 13-11, 11-5, 11-8 win The Blue then wrapped up the match with wins at one and four, with Rosemary O'Connor winning 11-4, 11-5, 11-4 at one and sophomore Lilly Tyson taking her match at four, 11-3, 11-5, 11-3.

The Wellesley College squash team is back in action this weekend at Mount Holyoke, taking part in the 2013 Seven Sisters Championship. The Blue will open with a match against #33 Vassar College, before taking on #20 Mount Holyoke and #36 Smith.
