MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Wellesley College track and field team sent four runners to the Tufts University Cupid Challenge on Monday. Two Blue runners hit qualifying marks at the event, which was rescheduled twice due to the recent blizzard.
Leading the way for Wellesley were seniors Randelle Boots and Cristina Lucas, who each surpassed qualifying standards for the New England Division III and ECAC Division III Championships. Boots placed fourth (18:30.28) in the 5,000m race, running for the first time at that distance. Lucas finished sixth (5:09.52) in the mile, hitting ECAC qualifying standards and improving her seed time for the New England Championships.
Two other competitors for Wellesley also had quality races, recording personal best times. First-year Carolyn Chelius hit a personal best time of 2.33.73 in the 800m race, placing 13th overall. Classmate Alessandra Gavin also hit a personal best, running a 5:25.74 to finish 15th in the mile.
Up next for Wellesley, qualified Blue athletes will compete at the New England Division III Championships this weekend. The event will be hosted at the University of Southern Maine's Costello Sports Complex Field House.
