SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College track and field team opened the 2013 outdoor season with a solid outing at the non-scoring Mount Holyoke Spring Fling.
Wellesley recorded 10 top-five finishes at the event, led by a victory from sophomore Alexandra Dunn, a new Blue record from first-year Caitlin Bailey, and second place finishes from both senior Cristina Lucas and the 4 x 400m relay team.
Dunn posted a winning time of 2:25.10 in the 800m event, recording an outdoor personal best time. She led a pack of eight Wellesley competitors in the event, which included a fourth place finish from Lucas (2:26.42), a sixth place finish from first-year Victoria Lee (2:27.09) and an eighth place finish from first-year Sharon Ng.
Bailey hit her program record in the 100-meter hurdles. Her time of 17.66 ranked her third overall, and she broke a seven-year old Wellesley record of 17.83.
Lucas recorded her second place finish in the 1,500-meter event, where she paced five Wellesley finishers in the event. Her time of 4:56.47 was second overall, followed by senior Ada Smith (10th- 5:06.26), first-year Alessandra Gavin (11th- 5:08.17), junior Jane Lodwick (12th- 5:11.59) and first-year Priyanka Fouda (13th- 5:15.87). Today's event marked the first 1,500m race for Smith, Gavin and Fouda.
In the 4 x 400m relay, Wellesley raced three teams, led by the the "A" team of Ng, sophomores Kathleen Hanlon and Kendra Waters, and first-year Emma Kissane. They paired up for a second place finish, recording a time of 4:15.98. The Blue's "B" team also finished well, ranking fourth overall as Bailey, Gavin, Lucas and Dunn combined for a time of 4:28.72.
Elsewhere, Waters led the way in both the 100m and 200m events. She ranked third overall in the 200m with a time of 27.92, while finished fourth overall in the 100m with a 13.91. Hanlon also placed well in both sprints, ranking fourth in the 200 in 27.93 and sixth in the 100 in 13.98.
Rounding out the top finishes, senior Eden Bass recorded a fifth place finish in the 400m race and the Blue 4 x 100m relay placed fourth overall. Bass recorded a personal best time of 65.49 in the 400m race, while in the relay, Wellesley's team of junior Sheena Dupuy, junior Zoe Sobel, Bailey and Hanlon finished in 54.89.
Wellesley is back in action on April 6th at the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by America International College.
