SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Wellesley College track and field team had a strong day of competition at the Yellowjacket Invitational hosted by American International College on Saturday.
The Blue competed against teams from Divisions I, II and III, scoring points in five out of the eight events they entered.
Leading the way for Wellesley, senior Cristina Lucas scored in both the 1,500m and 800m races. In the 1,500m event, she ranked sixth overall, qualifying for the New England Division III and ECAC Championships with a time of 4:45.97. In the 800, she finished eighth overall, hitting a personal best with a time of 2:23.67.
Sophomore Kendra Waters also hit New England Division III qualifying standards, finishing eighth overall in the 400m event. Her time of 60.96 ranked her first in her heat and makes her the second fastest Wellesley 400m performer in program history.
Also scoring for the Blue were first-year Madeline Gorchels and the 4x100m relay team of junior Sheena Dupuy, first-year Emma Kissane, sophomore Kathleen Hanlon, and Waters. Gorchels competed in the steeplechase for the first time ever, and ranked eighth overall at the event. The 4x100m relay team won their heat with a 52.75, ranking sixth overall.
Wellesley hit three other personal best times at the meet, two coming in the 800m and one in the 200m. In the 800, sophomore Alexandra Dunn recorded an outdoor best time of 2:24.66 to finish 11th overall, while first-year Carolyn Chelius also hit an outdoor best, with a time of 2:33.75. In the 200m, Waters' time of 27.91 was her personal best.
Elsewhere, Wellesley added three other top-20 performances. In the 800m, first-year Sharon Ng ranked 13th overall in 2:25.51, while classmate Victoria Lee ranked 19th with a 2:31.51. In the 400m, Hanlon finished in 17th place.
The Blue return to the track on Saturday, at UMass Amherst, competing in the Minutemen Invitational.
