Blue Swimming & Diving Continues To Roll with 212-88 Win at Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Wellesley College swimming & diving earned its third dual meet victory of the week and fifth of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference rival Smith College, 212-88.  

The Blue won 14 of 16 events with senior Keelin Nave (Minneapolis, Minn.), junior Dorothy Ren (San Jose, Calif.) and sophomore Hannah Augst (Richmond, Va.) and first year Maura Sticco-Ivins (Framingham, Mass.) each capturing a pair of first place finishes in individual events.

Nave won both the 200-Fly and the 100-Free, capturing the 200-Fly with a time of 2:12.87 and 100-Free in 54.21 seconds. 

Ren opened her day with victory in the 1000-Free. Ren touched the wall with the top time of 11:28.45, nearly seven seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Claire Dudek of Smith. Ren then went on to take the 100-Fly with a time of 59.85 seconds. Ren was the only finisher under one minute in the event but she finished narrowly ahead of Nave, who captured second with a time of 1:00.20.

Augst raced to victory in the 200-Free and the 200 Back. Augst, Tiffany Chen (Wayland, Mass.) and Sarah May (Montgomery, Ohio) finished one-two-three in the 200-Free, Augst delivered the top-time at 2:03.38. Chen finished in 2:08.82 while May had a time of 2:10.13. Augst again led a one-two-three finish for the Blue in the 200-Back, touching the wall at 2:14.47 ahead of Leah Furman (Canonsburg, Penn.) at 2:18.88 and Sharon Wu (Northfield, Ill.) at 2:19.06.

Led by May, Wellesley would also sweep the top three spot in the 200-IM. May finished with the top time 2:23.07 ahead of Grace Bachman (Lexington, Mass.), 2:24.07, and Patricia Chen (Natick, Mass.), 2:24.86.

Nave and Augst also joined Wu and Charlotte Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio) to win the 200-Medley Relay in Wellesley's first event of the day. The team combined for a time of 1:56.37. 

First year diver Maura Sticco-Ivins defeated Smith's Elly Stone to win both the one and three meter diving competitions. In the one meter, Sticco-Ivins recorded the top score of 281.75, while in the three meter she was the only diver to score over 300, 314.20. Sticco-Ivins score in the three meter competition established a new Wellesley school record.

Classmate Emily Moore (Milwaukee, Wis.) took third in the one meter, at 258.65, while Madeline Stern (Phoenix, Ariz.) took third in the three meter, with a score of 264.90. 

In the 100-Breast, Erin Yang out-dueled teammate Lindsey Wu (Livingston, N.J.) to take the event with time of 1:12.27, ahead of Wu's mark of 1:13.74. However, Wu later captured a first place time of her own when she won the 200-Breast with a time of 2:36.06.

After helping to capture the 200-Medley, Harris returned later in the day to win the 500-Free with a time of 5:24.07.

Augst, May, Ren and Tiffany Chen (Wayland, Mass.) closed out the day with a victory in the 400-Free Relay, clocking in at 3:50.33 to finish ahead of Wellesley's 'B' team of Theresa Mitchell (Brownstown Township, Mich.), Sharon Wu, Fiona Chung (Lexington, Mass.) and Harris. 

Wellesley and Smith will both return to the pool for the annual Seven Sisters Championship, next Saturday and Sunday at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley Mass. Competition is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM on both days.
