Wellesley Squash Scores Big 7-2 Victory Over Colby

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Wellesley College squash shook off a pair of defeats at positions two and three to upset Colby College, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon at MIT. With the win, the Blue, currently ranked 23rd in the College Squash Association rankings, improve to 3-1 on the season. Colby, ranked 20th in the CSA, now stands at 1-1 overall. 

The Wellesley win snaps a three-match win streak for the Mules, who last lost to the Blue, 5-4, on November 24, 2013.

Wellesley opened with a 1-0 lead thanks to a default victory at number nine. Juniors Navisha Gupta (Mumbai, India) and Ruby Feng (Old Lyme, Conn.) then added victories at number six and number eight, with Gupta rallying from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Elise O'Brien in five games: 5-11, 11-3, 11-6, 4-11, 11-5. Feng swept to a 3-0 win over Cary Beehler.

Colby got on the board at number three, as Helen Bernhard earned a five game win over junior Meera Nayar (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), 11-6, 9-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-5.

The Blue would go on to clinch the match thanks to victories from senior Kate Loftus (Portland, Ore.) and junior Rhea Advani (Mumbai, India). Both players notched four game wins, with Loftus defeating Kathryn Chow, 12-10, 4-11, 11-7, 12-10 at number seven, and Advani besting Camilla Di Galoma, 11-8, 11-8, 11-13, 11-9 at five.

A five-game setback for sophomore Phyllis Lin (Acton, Mass.) gave Colby their second win in of the match, but the Mules would only go on to drop two more five-game decisions to the Blue. 

In the top matchup, sophomore Sarah Zhang (Lexington, Mass.) defeated Devin Mullaney, rallying from a 2-1 deficit to take a 3-2 win, 11-8, 1-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-7. Senior Gabriella Wynne (Brookline, Mass.) then capped the Blue's 7-2 victory with an 8-11, 11-7, 5-11, 11-6, 11-9 victory over Mikaela Johnson at number four. 

Wellesley squash will play their third match in three days on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM. The Blue will take on Hamilton at Harvard University.
