Andersen, Narvaez, Sharon Lead Wellesley Track & Field at Tufts Stampede

MEDFORD, Mass. – Sophomore Helen Andersen (Madison, N.J.) furthered her own school record in the weight throw and seniors Edie Sharon (Winchester, Mass.) and Isabella Narvaez (Cali, Colombia) each registered qualifying times for the New England Division III Championships, as Wellesley College track & field competed in the Tufts Stampede on Saturday. There were no team scores at the meet.

Andersen crushed her previous mark of 11.72m, unleashing a toss of 12.34 to take 11th place on Saturday. First year Crystalina Guo (Montgomery, N.J.) added a throw of 10.96m to finish in 23rd, but was also the Blue's top finisher in the shot put with a mark at 9.30m.

Sharon qualified for the NE DIII Championships with a time of 5:22.14 in the Mile, taking fifth place overall. Classmate Sara Vannah (Amherst, Mass.) added a 15th place finish for the Blue with a time of 5:39.50. Narvaez, who also ran on Friday night at Boston University, raced to a time of 59.89 to take seventh in the 400m, clocking her second NE DIII mark of the weekend.

Sophomore Jenn Harris (Vestal, N.Y.) added a time of 1:10.11 in the 400m, while also taking part in the 200m (31.46) and the 60m Hurdles (11.06) on the day. Also competing in the 60m Hurdles, first year Hannah Knoll (Boise, Idaho) finished in 11.32. Harris was the second-highest Wellesley finisher in the 200m, trailing only junior Priscilla Lee (Anaheim, Calif.), who took 51st place in 29.89.

Lee went on to compete in both the High Jump and the Long Jump, clearing 1.42m to take 16th in the High Jump and leaping to a distance of 4.27m in the Long Jump. Lee joined senior Emma Scalisi (Waltham, Mass.) in the Long Jump, where Scalisi was 12th with a leap of 4.60m. Scalisi's best performance of the day came in the Triple Jump, as the Wellesley senior took sixth (9.95m).

Juniors Isabella King (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Taylor Fortnam (Portola Valley, Calif.) each finished in the top-15 in the 800m, with King leading the way in 13th (2:30.68), just seconds ahead of Fortnam's time (2:32.89). Fortnam added to a successful day with a top-ten time in the 3000m, leading Wellesley's contingent with a ninth place time of 11:01.79. First years Fiona Harrigian (San Marino, Calif.) and Sarah Halabe (Los Altos, Calif.) also added times of 12:08.98 and 12:34.71, respectively, in the 3000m.

Blue track & field will return to Tufts next weekend for the Tufts Cupid Challenge on Saturday, February 4, at 10:00 AM.
