Wellesley Swimming & Diving Cruises to 202-98 Dual Victory Over Mount Holyoke

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College swimming and diving took first in 13 of 16 events to earn a 202-98 victory over Seven Sisters rival Mount Holyoke College in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) dual meet on Saturday afternoon at Chandler Pool.

The Blue, No. 10 in the latest CSCAA Regional Poll, move to 3-0 in dual meets and at Chandler Pool. Mount Holyoke slips to 2-2 with the result. 

Sophomore Hannah May (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the way with three individual victories in two different strokes for the Blue. May and junior Maggie Haley (Shady Side, Md.) earned a 1-2 Wellesley sweep in the 200 Fly with times of 2:18.97 and 2:21.85, respectively. May was then first in the 100 Free (55.79), as fellow rookies Jessica Wegner (Taipei, Taiwan) and Paulina Gonzalez (Caracas, Venezuela) took second (56.29) and third (57.84) and senior Jessie Feng (Princeton, N.J.) finished fourth in 58.51. 

May later went on to win the 500 Free, taking the distance event in 5:32.48. Wellesley also earned the second and third place times in the 500 Free. First year Allie Chiou (Chandler, Ariz.) earned runner-up honors in 5:52.01, while classmate Grace Bronstone (Truckee, Calif.) was third in 5:56.62. The Blue won both distance events in the meet, as Gonzalez was first in the 1000 Free in 11:20.38, finishing more than ten seconds ahead of Mount Holyoke's Ashton Bliss (Honolulu, Hawaii), who finished second in 11:30.42.

First year Peyton Wang (Palo Alto, Calif.), junior Danielle Peterson (Livingston, N.J.), Wegner, and senior Crystal Zhu (Chelmsford, Mass.) opened the meet with a Blue victory in the 200 Medley Relay, finishing with a time of 1:54.51. Wang and Peterson each went on to add a pair of individual victories in the Blue win. 

Peterson led a 1-2-3 Wellesley sweep of the 200 Free in the third event, earning a time of 2:01.75, with first year Shelby Ripp (St. Louis, Mo.) and Feng following in second (2:03.10) and third (2:03.51), respectively. Peterson was also first in the 200 Breast, finishing in 2:35.70.

Wang was first in both the 50 Free and the 100 Fly. Wellesley took the top-three spots in the 50 Free, with Wang (25.56) leading Wegner (25.68) and Svensson (25.70) to the wall. Wellesley was 1-2 in the 100 Fly, as Wang just outdistanced Sunny Chiang (Troy, Mich.), finishing ahead of the Blue senior with a time of 1:03.31. Chiang took runner-up honors in 1:03.69. Chiang was also second in the 100 Back (1:03.96), where Wegner earned the win with a time of 1:00.80, but  would grab an individual victory of her own in the 200 Back (2:17.76), leading a 1-2 Wellesley finish, with junior Kayleigh Svensson taking second (2:21.89). 

Mount Holyoke's only swimming victory came in the 200 IM, where senior Bri Groves (Reston, Va.) finished in 2:22.14. Groves has a strong afternoon for the visitors, also finishing second in the 100 Breast (1:11.99), just tenths of a second behind Wellesley sophomore Jessica Wu's (Palo Alto, Calif.) time of 1:11.12, and the 200 Breast with a time of 2:36.86.

Mount Holyoke junior diver Samantha Nemivant (Scottsdale, Ariz.) swept both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter diving events, earning scores of 253.00 on the 1-meter board and 249.50 in the 3-meter competition. Wellesley senior Ingrid Henderson (Berkeley, Calif.) was third in the 1-meter (202.05) and in the 3-meter (194.45). First year Emma Roberts (Boxford, Mass.) was sixth in the 1-meter (162.20) and fourth in the 3-meter (168.80).

Wellesley ended the meet with a victory in the 400 Free Relay, racing to a time of 3:49.56. Peterson, Svensson, Wang, and May all combined for the top time. Ripp, senior Emma MaGee (Stormville, N.Y.), first year Julie Mason (Lakeville, Mass.), and Gonzalez finished second in 3:53.67.

Wellesley returns to action on Friday, November 30 at 6:00 PM on the first night of the MIT Invitational.
