Wellesley Swim & Dive Remains in Sixth Following Saturday at NEWMACs

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Junior Sunny Chiang (Troy, Mich.) led Wellesley College swimming & diving with a seventh place finish in the 400 IM on the third day of the 2018 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday night at MIT's Zeisger Center Pool.

Chiang earned seventh place in the 400 IM with a time of 4:42.53, helping the Blue (302.5 points) hold on to their sixth place position in the team standings through three days on competition. Host MIT continues to lead the ten team field with 866 points. Wheaton (687.5) is in second, with Springfield (507.5) and WPI (474) following in third and fourth. Coast Guard (409.5) is in fifth.

Wellesley junior Jessie Feng (Princeton, N.J.) followed Chiang's performance on Saturday night by winning the B Final of the 100 Fly. Feng finished in 11th place overall at 59.81, while teammate Maggie Haley (Shady Side, Md.) followed in the 13th slot, finishing in 1:00.17. Sophomore Kayleigh Svensson (Palo Alto, Calif.) would go on to add a second B Final victory, securing the 11th place finish in the 100 Back at 59.14.

 Later in the the program, the 200 Medley Relay of Chiang, first year Jessica Wu (Palo Alto, Calif.), Feng, and senior Patricia Chen (Natick, Mass.), closed out the night for the Blue, as they finished 14th overall with a time of 1:52.34.

After qualifying for the A Final of the 200 Free in 1:57.68 during Saturday's prelims, first year Margaret Harrigan (Chatham, N.J.) finished ninth overall in the event with a time of 1:57.78. Classmate Emily Yeager (Pittsfield, Mass.) took the 15th spot, taking fifth in the B Final after touching the wall at 1:58.98. Yeager was also 15th overall in the 100 Back in 1:02.07.

Sophomore Danielle Peterson (Livingston, N.J.) and Wu saw action in the 100 Breast final, adding two more solid B Final times for the Blue. Peterson was the B Final runner-up in the event and finished 12th overall in 1:08.95, while Wu finished 16th with a 1:10.18 time.

Day four of the NEWMAC Championships will continue on Sunday with the 1650 Free, 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Fly, 400 Free Relay, and the 1-Meter Dive. Swimming preliminaries will take place at 10:00 AM and diving preliminaries begin at 1:15 PM. Finals in both swimming & diving will start at 6:00 PM.
