Blue Swim & Dive Celebrates Senior Day with 164-126 Victory Smith

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College swimming & diving celebrated Senior Day with a 164-126 dual meet victory over New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and Seven Sisters rival Smith College on Saturday afternoon at Chandler Pool.

Wellesley seniors Sarah Gladstone (Brookline, Mass.), Maggie Haley (Shady Side, Md.), Danielle Peterson (Livingston, N.J.), and Kayleigh Svensson (Palo Alto, Calif.) were recognized in a ceremony prior to the start of the meet. The seniors then combined for a time of 2:00.93 to take third in the opening 200 Medley Relay, as Wellesley finished with a 1-2-3 sweep of the event.

Wellesley's 'B' relay of sophomore Jessica Wegner (Taipei, Taiwan), first year Elizabeth Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.), sophomore Julie Mason (Lakeville, Mass.) and first year Shawyuan Hsu (Taipei, Taiwan) finished with a winning time of 1:54.69 in the 200 Medley Relay, just ahead of the 'C' relay of first year Melanie Zhang (Westlake Village, Calif.), Sophomore Shelby Ripp (St. Louis, Mo.) and Sophomore Marisa Papagelis (Westborough, Mass.) and Junior Hannah May (Cincinnati, Ohio), who totaled a time of 2:00.02.

Wellesley would go on to win ten of the 15 remaining events in the meet, with the seniors earning three victories. Haley captured a pair of events, winning the 50 Fly in 28.77 and the 100 Fly in 1:00.82, while Peterson was first in the 100 Breaststroke (1:11.08).

Hsu continued a strong weekend with wins in each of the sprint Free event. Hsu finished first in the 50 Free in 24.81 and win the 100 Free in 55.06. Park took the 200 Free (2:03.01), while Papgelis, Ripp, and May combined for the remaining three Blue victories, taking first in the 50 Backstroke (30.18), 50 Breaststroke (33.11), 100 Backstroke (1:05.13), respectively.

Smith's captured both distance free events, with Haley Brown (Kewadin, Mich.) winning the 1000 Free in 2:03.01 and Kristin Cirulli (Edgewood, Ky.) taking the 500 Free in 5:30.80. Shoshana Werblow (Ashland, Ore.) won both diving events for the Pioneers, earning a score of 228.35 in 1-meter diving and 252.55 on the 3-meter board.

Wellesley returns to action next weekend at the Mount Holyoke Invitational. The two-day meet will take place on Saturday and Sunday, January 18-19, at the Mount Holyoke Natatorium.
