CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Sophomore Jessica Wegner (Taipei, Taiwan) captured her second career 100 Fly title in a school record time of 55.57, finished third in the 100 Back, and helped the Blue to bronze in the 200 Medley Relay to lead Wellesley College swimming & diving on Saturday at the 2020 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming & Diving Championships at MIT's Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool.
The Blue moved up to third place in the team standings thanks to multiple standout performances on day three. Host MIT remains in first with 905.5 points. The Engineers are followed by second place Wheaton (582), the third place Blue (466.5) and fourth place WPI (448). Springfield (413) is fifth, with Coast Guard (355.5), Babson (248.5), and Smith (233) in sixth, seventh, and eighth. Mount Holyoke (183) and Clark (122) round out the team standings.
Junior Hannah May (Cincinnati, Ohio) joined Wegner on the Wellesley record board with a silver medal performance in the 200 Free. May finished second in 1:53.63, breaking the previous Wellesley program record of 1:53.67 set by Keelin Nave '14 in 2013. Senior Danielle Peterson (Livingston, N.J.) added an eighth place finish in 1:57.12 to give the Blue two of the top eight in the field in the 200 Free.
Wegner helped lead an outstanding team performance by the Blue in the 100 Fly. Wegner topped her own school record time for gold, while senior Maggie Haley (Shady Side, Md.) took sixth in 58.70 and sophomore Julie Mason (Lakeville, Mass.) was 8th in 58.99. Wegner added to her medal count later in the evening, returning to take bronze in the 100 Back with a time of 57.96 in the A Final.
Sophomore Emery Dutton (Wayland Mass.) opened Saturday's final with a ninth place finish in the 400 IM. Dutton jumped up one spot from her 10th place time during prelims, recording a new PR in 4:42.03 in the A Final. First year Elizabeth Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) was the top finisher in the 100 Breast for Wellesley, winning the B Final in 1:07.51 to take 11th overall with the ninth fastest time of the evening session.
The Blue closed out the evening with another bronze medal, this time taking third in the 200 Medley Relay. First year Shawyuan Hsu (Taipei, Taiwan) teammed with Park, Wegner, and May to help the Blue edge Springfield by two-tenths of a second and take third in 1:48.16.
Sunday is the final day of the 2020 NEWMAC Championships with competition in the 1650 Free, 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Fly, Women's 1-Meter Diving, and the 400 Free Relay. For more information, visit newmacsports.com.
