Swimming & Diving Defeats Smith 190-107 on the Road

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Wellesley swimming & diving took down Smith College on Saturday afternoon by a score of 190-107. The Blue took first place in 11 of 16 events.

The first event of the day was the 200 yard Medley Relay, which was won by the quartet of Mira Tang (Mercer Island, Wash.),  Jessica Wegner (Taipei, Taiwan), Angela Zhu (Bayside, N.Y.), and Ariana Mitsuoka (Centennial, Co.) at 1:55.42. The Blue also took control of the 200 Free Relay, with Zhu, Wegner, McKaela Glanville (Menlo Park, Calif.), and Mitsuoka who swam a 1:42.44.

Along with being a part of the 200 Free Relay team, Glanville took home three individual victories. The sophomore swam a 2:01.39 in the 200 Free, which was two second faster than Julia Petrino (Fort Collins, Co.) of Smith. Glanville backed up her first win with a first place swim of 2:30.94 in the 200 Breast. Teammate Shawfong Hsu (Taipei, Taiwan) placed second at 2:37.14. Her third win of the day came in the 200 yard IM at 2:13.85.

Sophomore Ariana Mitsuoka also won multiple races, taking first in the 50 and 100 Free. In the 50 Free, she beat out Caroline Kolmodin (Mountainside, N.J.) of Smith with a first place time of 25.82 seconds. Mitsuoka then clocked a 55.88 to win the 100 Free and Mellany Smith (West Orange, N.J.) placed second at 56.46.

In the diving portion of the meet, junior Lily Duff (Scituate, Mass.) earned her first win of the season in the 3 meter. She earned a finals score of 194.60 to take the gold. Duff also placed second in the 1 meter diving with a score of 196.00. Teammate Claire Moreland (San Francisco, Calif.) placed third in both events, with a score of 147.80 in the 1 meter and 155.60 in the 3 meter. 

Senior Jessica Wegner once again had a first place finish for the Blue with a win in the 100 yard Backstroke at 1:01.71. Tang earned a second place finish with a time of 1:02.63.

First year Maya Hart (Menlo Park, Calif.) clocked a 1:11.43 to win the 100 Breast. She finished just ahead of Hsu who finished the event in 1:12.50.

Reigning NEWMAC Co-Swimmer of the Week Cecilia Cai continued her hot streak, taking first place in the 500 Free with a time of 5:19.75. 

Up next, The Blue return home to host Merrimack and Coast Guard on Saturday, January 29 starting at 1:00 PM.
