Wegner Breaks NEWMAC and School 100 Fly Record in Day Three of the NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Senior Jessica Wegner (Taipei, Taiwan) set a new New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) open and school record and captured her third career 100 Fly title in a time of 55.30 and helped the Blue to a sixth place finish in the 200 Medley Relay to lead Wellesley College swimming & diving on Saturday at the 2022 NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Championships at MIT's Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool.

The Blue remain in sixth place in the team standings after day three action. Host MIT remains in first with 912.5 points. The Engineers are followed by second place Wheaton (633), third place Springfield (431) and fourth place Coast Guard (425). WPI (370.5) is fifth, with the Blue (353.5), Babson (223.5), and Smith (210) in sixth, seventh, and eighth. Mount Holyoke (197) and Clark (141) round out the team standings.

First year Cecilia Cai (Palo Alto, Calif.) opened Saturday's final with a fifth place finish in the 400 IM with a new school record and PR of 4:34.55. Senior Shelby Ripp (St. Louis, Mo.) added an 11th place finish at 4:41.46 and classmate Emery Dutton (Wayland, Mass.) was one spot behind with a time of 4:45.97. In 12th place was first year Julia Lucey (Old Greenwich, Conn.) coming in with a finals time of 4:46.86. Rounding out the event was first year Maya Hart (Menlo Park, Calif.) at 4:57.08.

Four Blue swimmers competed in the finals of the 100 Breast with sophomore Ariana Mitsuoka (Centennial, Co.) placing 12th with a time of 1:06.73. Following was junior Elizabeth Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) at 1:08.84, Hart at 1:10.56, and first year Eva McNally (Shorewood, Wisc.) at 1:11.67.

Sophomore McKaela Glanville (Menlo Park, Calif.) earned a fifth place finish in the 200 Free with a new personal record of 1:55.31.

First year Anegla Zhu (Bayside, N.Y.) joined Wegner in the 100 Fly with a 12th place finish at 59.14. Wegner was also the top finisher for the Blue in the 100 Back in 13th pace with a time of 58.01. Sophomore Mira Tang took 14th clocking in at 59.07. Classmate Mellany Smith (West Orange, N.J.) also scored in the event with a time of 1:00.63.

The Blue closed out the evening with a sixth place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. Tang teammed with Hart, Wegner, and Mitsuoka to clock a combined time of 1:48.54. 

Sunday is the final day of the 2022 NEWMAC Championships with competition in the 1650 Free, 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, and 200 Fly. For more information, visit newmacsports.com.
