Blue Swimming & Diving Defeats Wheaton in Season Opener, 149.5-147.5

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College swimming & diving raced to a hard-earned 149.5-147.5 dual meet victory over NEWMAC rival Wheaton College on Saturday at Chandler Pool. The Blue (1-0 overall) and the Lyons (2-1 overall) each won eight events but Wellesley used its squad depth to help clinch the win.

The Blue opened with a victory in the 200 Medley Relay, behind a time of 1:48.03 from the relay of sophomores Tracey Liu (Princeton, N.J.) and Kavita Sekhon (Los Angeles, Calif.), junior Cecilia Cai (Palo Alto, Calif.) and sophomore Aubrey Cantrell (Palo Alto, Calif.). 

Wheaton countered in the 1000 Free, using the distance event to find some distance in the standings, the Lyons took the top three spots in 1000 Free, paced by a time of 11:15.88 from sophomore Vivian Van Holland (Excelsior, Minn.). Van Holland also captured the 500 Free later in the meet with a time of 5:28.99. 

Wellesley earned victories in the next four events to jump to a 63.5 to 47.5 advantage in the team standings. Senior McKaela Glanville (Menlo Park, Calif.) captured the 200 Free in 2:00.75, classmate Mira Tang (Mercer Island, Wash.) finished in 1:00:41 to win the 100 Back, Sekhon picked up a second victory with a time of 1:04.95 in the 100 Breaststroke and Cai notched another victory by winning the 200 Fly in 2:12.33. 

Wheaton matched Wellesley by winning the next four events. Senior Lily Watson (Waterford, Conn.) took the 50 Free in 25.28, junior Morgen Coughlin-Doyle (Topsham, Maine) was first in 1 meter diving with a score of 283.95, junior Katie Walz (Bellevue, Wash.) won the 100 Free in 53.80 and classmate Reese Hartmann (Grand Rapids, Mich.) was first in the 200 Back in 2:11.69. 

With Wheaton now leading in the team standings, Sekhon and sophomore Lara Dashti (Kuwait) finished 1-2 for Wellesley in the 200 Breaststroke. Sekhon paced the field in 2:24.01 and Dashti finished in 2:26.88. Victories by Van Holland in the 500 Free and Walz (58.48) in the 100 Fly put Wheaton back in front. 

Wellesley first year Jaya Magavi (West Hartford, Conn.) earned a first collegiate victory in 3 meter diving with a score of 235.00. Magavi was third in 1 meter diving but earned a regional qualifying mark of 258.65. Sophomore Elsa Marsden (Vienna, Va.) also earned a regional mark on the 1 meter board with a score of 259.00. 

Glanville, Dashti and Sekhon helped push the Blue to victory in the 200 IM, finishing 1-2-3 in the day's second to last event. Glanville was first in 2:12.71, followed by Dashti in 2:14.04, and Sekhon 2:15.88, as the teammates pushed the Blue to a 145.5-134.5 advantage. Wheaton would win the 400 Free Relay to close the meet, behind a time of 3:39.40 from Walz, sophomore Garin Stone (Barrington, R.I.), Hartmann and senior Amelia Butler (New York, N.Y.). Wellesley took second thanks to Cantrell, Tang, first year Joyce Kim (Houston, Texas) and Cai in 3:39.59 to hold on for the 149.5-147.5 victory in the standings. 

Next up, the Blue will host Simmons and Merrimack on Saturday, November 4 at 11:00 AM. The Lyons are scheduled to travel to Bridgewater State for a 2:00 PM meet next Saturday.
