Blue Fencing Spotless in 4-0 Debut at LIU Shark Tank Challenge

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Wellesley College fencing started the 2024-25 by winning all four of its matches at the LIU Shark Tank Challenge on Sunday.

Foil squad won all four of its matches. Sophomore Lauren Khoo (San Francisco, Calif.) was near perfect with a 10-1 record. Junior Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) added nine wins.

Sabre squad also went undefeated on the day. First year Emily Zhao (Yorktown, Va.) debuted going 11-1 while senior Makana Burch (Portland, Ore.) and sophomore Rebecca Hsieh (Annadale, Va.) each collected seven victories.

Epee squad claimed a pair of wins, led by six individual victories from junior Grace Xu (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore Alisha Li (Warren, N.J.).

Wellesley 15, NJIT 12

Sabre grabbed six points versus NJIT. Zhao won three matches, Hsieh took two and Burch added the final point. Foil won 5-4, backed by a pair of wins from Khoo and Huang. First year Daisy Wiseman (Austin, Texas) won a first collegiate bout. Xu snatched two victories in epee and A. Li and first year Renee Sunn (Houston, Texas) both notched one point.

Wellesley 20, Stevens 7

All three squads defeated Stevens. Khoo, Hsieh and Zhao were all a perfect 3-0. Burch, Xu, Sun and Huang tallied two wins each. A. Li, senior Elena Vona (Millstone, N.J.) and first year Julia Peeler (Fairfax, Va.) all nabbed a win.

Wellesley 15, LIU 12

Foil won six points, backed by 2-1 performances from Huang and Khoo. Sophomore Phoebe Li (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Wiseman each scored a win. Zhao and Burch went 2-1 while Hsieh added a tally to give sabre a 5-4 squad win. A. Li, Sun and Xu combined for four epee victories.

Wellesley 18, Drew 9

All three squads earned victories over Drew to wrap up the undefeated day. Huang and Khoo claimed three wins each in foil while Wiseman added one point. In Epee, A. Li, Peeler, Vona, Xu and first year Sissi Zou (Shanghai, China) all contributed one victory. Zhao won all three matches in sabre and Burch provided two while Hsieh had one.

The Blue compete next Sunday, October 27 at the Northwestern Invitational in Evanston, Ill.
