Blue Fencing Takes Down Division I Penn State at Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. — Wellesley College fencing went 3-2, including a victory over No. 13 ranked Division I Penn State University, at the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday. The Blue dispatched Drew University and Lawrence University and improved to 21-7 as a team this season.

Sabre squad went 4-1, including topping Division I Penn State and Yale University. Senior Makana Burch (Portland, Ore.) and first year Judy Bang (Seoul, South Korea) had standout days, both getting nine wins against high level competition. Sophomore Rebecca Hsieh (Annadale, Va.) put up a 6-2 record to help the squad.

Foil claimed three wins on the day. Sophomore Lauren Khoo (San Francisco, Calif.) went 9-2 to set the tone while junior Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) recorded six wins, four against Division I opponents.

Epee also had a trio of victories. Sophomore Alisha Li (Warren, N.J.) and first year Sissi Zou (Shanghai, China)were victorious on eight occasions and first year Julia Peeler (Fairfax, Va.) added a quartet of points.

Cornell 22, Wellesley 5

Sabre narrowly fell 5-4 to No. 8 ranked Division I Cornell. Bang went 2-1 against the Big Red in sabre while Burch and first year Emily Zhao (Yorktown, Va.) each added a point. A. Li got the lone victory in epee.

Wellesley 20, Drew 7

Hsieh went 3-0, Bang scored two wins while Zhao and Burch both tacked on a tally to help sabre win 7-2. Khoo was undefeated in foil and Huang and first year Daisy Wiseman (Austin, Texas) both had two victories. A. Li, Peeler and Zou all won two bouts in epee.

Wellesley 20, Lawrence 7

Bang, Burch, Khoo, A. Li and sophomore Phoebe Li (Palo Alto, Calif.) were all perfect against Lawrence. Zou and Hsieh both grabbed two victories and Wiseman added one. All three squads were victorious.

Wellesley 16, Penn State 11

All three squads outscored their Division I foes. Huang and Khoo were undefeated at a combined 5-0 for foil. A. Li, Peeler and Zou all notched two bout wins in epee to give the squad a 6-3 win. Burch and Zhao both scored two victories in sabre and Bang added the winning fifth point.

Yale 18, Wellesley 9

The Blue took nine points off of No. 12 Division I ranked Yale. Sabre earned a 5-4 squad win. Burch led the way going 2-1. Bang, Hsieh and Zhao all won a bout to get the squad to five tallies. Zou captured a pair of epee bouts. Khoo and Huang both scored a point in foil.

The Blue will return from winter break on Sunday, January 12, 2025 at the Tufts Invitational in Medford, Mass.
