MEDFORD, Mass. – Wellesley College fencing competed at the Tufts Invitational on Sunday and nearly earned a win over the host. Additionally, the team competed against Division I competition in Northwestern University and Brown University.
Tufts 14, Wellesley 13
Foil squad picked up a 6-3 win over Tufts. Sophomore Lauren Khoo (San Francisco, Calif.) swept three bouts while classmate Phoebe Li (Palo Alto, Calif.) added two points and junior Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) had one win. Junior Grace Xu (Toronto, Ontario) and first year Sissi Zou (Shanghai, China) each grabbed a pair of points in epee. First year Emily Zhao (Yorktown, Va.) finished 2-1 in sabre and sophomore Rebecca Hsieh (Annadale, Va.) notched a victory.
Northwestern 22, Wellesley 5
Epee nearly overcame its Division I foes, narrowly losing 5-4. Sophomore Alisha Li (Warren, N.J.) captured two wins and Xu and first year Julia Peeler (Fairfax, Va.) added one bout each. Khoo picked up a point for the Blue in foil.
Brown 21, Wellesley 6
A. Li, Peeler and Xu all finished with one win against Division I Brown in epee. Zhao scored both of sabre's points and P. Li picked up the lone tally in foil.
Up next, the Blue are set to compete at the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Championships at Drew University on Sunday, February 16.
