SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Wellesley College track & field won a trio of events and finished second out of seven teams at Massasoit Classic at Springfield College on Saturday.
Host Springfield won the team competition with 243.5 points. The Blue placed second with 119. Westfield State (100.5), UMass Boston (82), Castleton (62), Union (28) and Hampshire (8) rounded out the field.
Senior Merete Ogah (Austin, Texas) won the 200m dash among 17 runners with a winning time of 27.22. First year Ellie Wolf (Irvine, Calif.) was the runner-up, coming in at 27.49. Junior Sara Maeve Klingensmith (Chapel Hill, N.C.) pointed in seventh with a time of 28.67. Ogah also made the 60m finals and finished third, coming in at 8.23.
Junior Emily Brydges (Suffield, Conn.) claimed first in the 3000m, topping the field at 10:55.91. Sophomore Maggie Yan (Montvale, N.J.) finished in third place, with the clock reading 11:53.51.
Senior Alicia Naranjo-Champion (El Monte, Calif.) and first year Helen Yang (Los Angeles, Calif.) placed 2-3 in the Indoor Mile. Naranjo-Champion was second with a time of 5:45.06. Yang claimed third with a 5:52.09 performance.
In the 400m dash, Seniors Charlie Barron (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Aoife Fitzgerald (Paxton, Mass.) captured second and third. Barron ran a 1:03.93 while Fitzgerald finished at 1:04.09. First year Abigail Choi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) tacked on a point, coming in eighth with a time of 1:07.50.
Junior Claire Peng (Chapel Hill, N.C.) grabbed bronze in the 1000m, running a 2:27.31. First years Leah Willis (Mercersburg, Pa.) (2:32.69) and Leeya Rice (Closter, N.J.) (2:35.43) were fifth and sixth.
Junior Kenya Francis (Atlanta, Ga.) set a PR in the Shot Put, earning fifth out of 26 competitors with a distance of 10.80m. First year Maggie Berlinger (Ashby, Mass.) debuted with a distance of 9.00m while classmate Maya Sharar (Andover, Mass.) threw 8.59m.
Francis and Sharar went 7-8 in the Weight Throw. Francis came within PR striking distance at 11.64m. Sharar set a new personal-best with a distance of 11.10m.
Junior Meg Dugan (Cohasset, Mass.) made a season debut, taking the runner-up spot in the 1000m with a 3:45.62 time.
Senior Erin Dickinson (Papillion, Neb.) earned six points in the Long Jump with a distance of 5.04m to claim third. Dickinson later took fifth in the Triple Jump, landing at 10.15m.
In the 5000m event, first year Adelaide Maguire (Oakland, Calif.) finished ninth with a 21:03.02 time. Sophomore Perry Huang Kemper (Boise, Idaho) took 14th, clocking in at 22:20.94.
The 4x400m Relay team of Fitzgerald, Klingensmith, Peng and Barron ended the day by earning gold with a top time of 4:19.77.
Up next, the Blue will compete at Boston University's John Thomas Terrier Classic on Friday, January 31.
