MADISON, N.J. – Wellesley College fencing went 2-1 on day one of the season opening Drew Invitational on Saturday. The Blue defeated NJIT and Drew University while falling to Denison University.
Wellesley 19, NJIT 8
Foil took an 8-1 victory, featuring 3-0 performances from senior Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) and first-year Emma Fung (Saratoga, Calif.) and two triumphs from first-year Viola Qian (Jiangsu, China). Epee took six out of nine bouts. Senior Grace Xu (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore Renee Sun (The Woodlands, Texas) both went 2-0 while senior Lily Millard (Selkirk, N.Y.) and first-year Elaine Lin (Flushing, N.Y.) each added a point. Sabre scored a 5-4 squad victory. Sophomore Judy Bang (Seoul, South Korea) won three matches and first-years Rai Henry (Takoma Park, Md.) and Lauren Lee (San Diego, Calif.) both added a tally.
Wellesley 20, Drew 7
Epee staged a 9-0 shutout, with senior Michelle Pan (Arlington, Mass.) and sophomore Julia Peeler (Fairfax, Va.) and Sissi Zou (Shanghai, China) spotless in three bouts each. Sabre scored seven, on the back of shutouts from junior Rebecca Hsieh (Annadale, Va.) and first-year Alice Wang (Newport Beach, Calif.), in addition to one win from first-year Joy Xu (Shanghai, China).
Denison 16, Wellesley 11
Epee staged a 6-3 victory over Denison. Xu claimed a trio of points while Sun and Lin combined for the other three. Fung, junior Lauren Khoo (San Francisco, Calif.) and sophomore Daisy Wiseman (Austin, Texas) all had a win in foil. Lee and Henry claimed the two scores in sabre.
