MADISON, N.J. – Wellesley College fencing won all six of its matches on the second day of the season-opening Drew Invitational on Sunday. The Blue end the weekend at 8-1 in a strong showing that bodes well for the season.
Epee won all but one of the nine matches this weekend. Senior Grace Xu (Toronto, Ontario) was perfect in 11 bouts, setting the tone. Sophomore Renee Sun (The Woodlands, Texas) went 10-1 across the two days while sophomore Julia Peeler (Fairfax, Va.) claimed nine points.
Sabre was also 8-1 in competition, including four shutouts. Sophomore Judy Bang (Seoul, South Korea) starred with a shiny 10-1 record. Junior Rebecca Hsieh (Annadale, Va.) and first-year Rai Henry (Takoma Park, Md.) each earned seven bouts in the Blue's favor.
The Foil squad finished the weekend at 7-2. First-year Viola Qian (Jiangsu, China) led the unit with a 13-2 record. Senior Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) and first-year Emma Fung (Saratoga, Calif.) each added nine total victories.
Wellesley 21, Haverford 6
Sabre shutout Haverford with Hsieh, Bang, and first-years Lauren Lee (San Diego, Calif.), Henry and Joy Xu (Shanghai, China) all undefeated. Foil went 7-2, courtesy of three points from Huang and Qian and one win by senior Claire Ma (Boston, Mass.). Epee squeezed out a narrow 5-4 decision in its favor. Senior Michelle Pan (Arlington, Mass.) and Peeler both took two out of three bouts while sophomore Sissi Zou (Shanghai, China) earned the fifth point.
Wellesley 25, Cleveland State 2
Epee swept all nine points while foil and sabre both captured 8-1 victories. Xu, Sun, first-year Elaine Lin (Flushing, N.Y.) Fung, Lee and Qian each claimed two victories. Senior Leena Hobson (Oakland, Calif.), first-year Alice Wang (Newport Beach, Calif.), Bang and Henry added on a point apiece.
Wellesley 23, Lafayette 4
Sabre earned a second shutout of the day. Xu, sophomore Emily Zhao (Yorktown, Va.) and Wang each claimed a match. Epee finished 8-1 due to Xu and Sun winning both of their bouts and Peeler adding a win. Fung, junior Lauren Khoo (San Francisco, Calif.) and sophomore Daisy Wiseman (Austin, Texas) all won bouts to give foil six points.
Wellesley 25, Wheaton 2
Senior Lily Millard (Selkirk, N.Y.), Peeler and Zou each defeated the Lyons in epee. Qian added a triumph in foil.
Wellesley 25, Detroit Mercy 2
Epee was spotless with Xu, Sun and Lin all winning at a 100% rate. Hsieh, Henry and Zhao won all of their sabre matches while Xu tacked on an eighth point. Khoo and Fung were both 2-0 in foil while Hobson notched a win.
Wellesley 22, Stevens 5
Foil and Sabre swept with Huang, Qian, Wiseman, Bang, Wang, Xu and Zhao all blazing the trail to success. Peeler won two out of three bouts in epee while Pan and Zou both collected a victory.
