BOSTON, Mass. – Wellesley College track & field began the indoor season at Suffolk Relays at Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass. on Saturday.
First-year Sophia Wang (Livingston, N.J.) made an outstanding first impression on the day. Wang led the 14-person leaderboard in the High Jump, recording a 1.60m jump. The 1.60m mark tied the Blue program record, set by Abena Asare '18 back in 2015, and also earned Wang a New England DIII Championship mark.
Wang earned another first place and New England DIII Championship mark in the Triple Jump. The first-year leapt 10.84m, well ahead of the second place finisher and only .09 off of the Blue record.Â
Sophomore Leah Willis (Mercersburg, Pa.), first-year Sophia Trabuco (Rochester, Minn.) and sophomore Leeya Rice (Closter, N.J.) went 1-2-3 in the 1000m race. Willis led the pack at 3:23.25, followed by Trabuco (3:23.78) and Rice (3:24.05).
Senior Kenya Francis (Atlanta, Ga.) earned fifth out of 30 in the Shot Put, throwing for 9.70m. Sophomore Maya Sharar (Andover, Mass.) was 12th in the event, opening the year with a 9.35m mark.
Francis later snagged fourth out of 32 in the Weight Throw, setting a PR at 13.13m. Sharar captured 10th, throwing for 11.54m, a new best for the sophomore. Sophomore Julia Carmona (Bronx, N.Y.) (21st - 8.91m) and first-year Eliza Glick (Dumont, N.J.) (27th - 7.75m) both competed in the Weight Throw.
Senior Simone Beauchamp (Aurora, Colo.) was the 3000m runner-up, hitting the finish line at 10:42.26, a personal record by almost 15 seconds. First-year Bela Kumar (Natick, Mass.) claimed ninth place in the race, posting a 12:01.06 time.
In the 400m, senior Sara Maeve Klingensmith (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was .01 off of a PR with 1:02.43 time, good for third in the event. First-year Madalena Ritz-Meuret (Dallas, Texas) finished 15th at 1:08.47 seconds.
Sophomore Ellie Wolf (Irvine, Calif.) and Klingensmith both came within a second of a New England DIII time in the 200m. Wolf earned the bronze out of 51 competitors at 27.28 seconds, while Klingensmith ran a 27.50 for sixth.
In the 60m prelims, Wolf came in 21st out of 56 individuals at 8.58 seconds. First-year Christina Yan (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) was just behind at 23rd overall with 8.62 seconds. First-year Shriya Kundranda (Scottsdale, Ariz.) ran an 8.87 and took 33rd. Kundranda also placed 17th in the Long Jump, hitting the sand at 4.28m.
The Blue will return in 2026 at the Gotham Cup at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. on Friday, January 16.
