Fencing Beats DI Penn State During Four Win Day at Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. – Wellesley College fencing improved to 19-7 on the year with a 4-2 day at the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday, highlighted by a thrilling 14-13 win over Division I Pennsylvania State University.

Foil squad finished 4-2 overall. Junior Lauren Khoo (San Francisco, Calif.) and first-year Emma Fung (Saratoga, Calif.) led the unit with eight wins each. Epee squad added four wins. Sophomore Sissi Zou (Shanghai, China) and first-year Elaine Lin (Flushing, N.Y.) had the high marks with eight victories. Sabre collected four victories. First-years Rai Henry (Takoma Park, Md.) and Alice Wang (Newport Beach, Calif.) topped the tally count at eight notches.

Cornell 22, Wellesley 5

Khoo went 2-1 in foil while Fung added a third point. Epee earned a pair of tallies with senior Grace Xu (Toronto, Ontario) and Lin both winning a bout.

Wellesley 21, Lawrence 6

Sabre squad took eight out of a possible nine points. Henry was spotless at 3-0 while classmates Lauren Lee (San Diego, Calif.) and Wang added two points apiece and junior Rebecca Hsieh (Annadale, Va.) snatched the eight score. Foil came up with seven points. Fung, senior Leena Hobson (Oakland, Calif.) and sophomore Daisy Wiseman (Austin, Texas) were all victorious on two occasions while Khoo earned a win. Epee won 6-3 with sophomores Renee Sun (The Woodlands, Texas) and Zou both winning twice. Xu and Lin put the finishing touches on with one win each.

Wellesley 20, Drew 7

Epee nabbed a dominant 8-1 victory. Zou and sophomore Julia Peeler (Fairfax, Va.) won three matches and senior Lily Millard (Selkirk, N.Y.) had two wins. Henry, Hsieh, Lee and Wang combined for seven sabre triumphs. Foil eked out a 5-4 win due to a 5-0 combined showing from senior Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) and first-year Viola Qian (Jiangsu, China).

Wellesley 14, Penn State 13

Epee and Sabre each earned narrow 5-4 squad wins over the Nittany Lions. Lee and Henry both took a pair in sabre and Wang was the pivotal fifth mark. Lin and Xu both won twice in epee and Sun added the victorious fifth tally. Fung and Khoo both went 2-1 for foil.

MIT 15, Wellesley 12

Foil made an impression with six points. Fung was undefeated while Khoo added two and Qian put up the sixth tally. Lee had two victories and Wang won once in sabre. Lin and Sun teamed up for three points in epee.

Wellesley 25, Haverford 2

Huang, Khoo, senior Claire Ma (Boston, Mass.), Qian, Wiseman, Henry, Hsieh, Wang, first-year Joy Xu (Shanghai, China), Lin and Zou were all undefeated while Millard went 2-1 in a one-sided win for the Blue.

The team returns in 2026 at the Tufts Invitational on Sunday, January 18.
