Blue Fencing Goes 5-1 to Finish Second at EWFC Championships

MADISON, N.J. – Wellesley College fencing went 5-1 and finished second out of 11 teams at the annual Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Championships, hosted at Drew University. Wellesley was awarded EWFC Coach Staff of the Year and both epee and foil squad placed second overall in their individual weapons.

Sophomore Lauren Khoo (San Francisco, Calif.) paced the foil squad with a 12-1 day. Classmate Phoebe Li (Palo Alto, Calif.) added nine victories while junior Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) and first year Daisy Wiseman (Austin, Texas) both had seven.

Sophomore Alisha Li (Warren, N.J.) had the high mark for epee with 10 tallies. Junior Michelle Pan (Arlington, Mass.) and first year Renee Sun (Houston, Texas) contributed eight scores each.

Senior Makana Burch (Portland, Ore.) captured nine wins in sabre and sophomore Rebecca Hsieh (Annadale, Va.) and first year Emily Zhao (Yorktown, Va.) combined to take 14 bouts.

Wellesley 27, City College of New York 0

The Blue shutout CCNY to open the day. Burch, senior Mia Chao (Washington, D.C.), Hsieh, Khoo, A. Li, junior Claire Ma (Boston, Mass.), junior Lily Millard (Selkirk, N.Y.), Pan, Sun, Wiseman, Zhao and first year Sissi Zou (Shanghai, China) all went undefeated to help Wellesley sweep all three weapons.

Wellesley 16, Stevens 11

Foil and epee squad each took a 6-3 decision over the Ducks. P. Li and Huang both went 2-1 and Khoo and Wiseman each put up a win for foil. A. Li, Pan and Sun all scored in two of three bouts for epee. Bang collected a pair of victories for sabre while Chao and Zhao both took one point.

Wellesley 21, Drew 6

Sabre swept Drew 9-0, with Bang, Burch and Hsieh all perfect. P. Li went 3-0 in foil and Khoo and Huang added a combined three extra tallies. A. Li and Pan paced epee with two victories apiece while Zou and Sun both tacked on a point.

Wellesley 24, Yeshiva 3

Wiseman, Huang, Ma, Khoo and P. Li teamed up to win all nine foil matches. Burch and Zhao both grabbed two points in sabre and Zou, Millard and Pan won five in epee.

Wellesley 14, Johns Hopkins 13

Big wins at foil and epee helped the Blue finished group play undefeated. Khoo went 3-0 in foil. P. Li scored twice and Huang added a tally. A. Li shutout Johns Hopkins in epee and Pan and Sun poured in two wins apiece. Burch earned the lone point in sabre.

Denison 16, Wellesley 11

In the placement match between the top two teams, Denison won tightly contested bouts in all three weapons. Sabre and foil each notched four points. Bang, Burch, Hsieh and Zhao all put a mark in the Blue's column for sabre. Khoo won a pair of bouts in foil and Huang and P. Li added the remaining two points. Epee scored three points, two by way of A. Li and one from Sun.

Next up, Wellesley will take part in the annual New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference (NEIFC) Championships, held at Mount Holyoke College on Sunday, February 23.
