Blue Track & Field Takes Bronze at Peter de Villiers Cup; Whinney and Francis Win Events

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Wellesley College track & field finished third the Smith College and Mount Holyoke College on Saturday at the Peter de Villiers Cup. The Pioneers totaled 68 points while Mount Holyoke had 59, followed by the Blue with 40.

Junior Ella Whinney (Madison, Wis.) started the day by winning the High Jump with a personal-best height of 1.51m.

Junior Kenya Francis (Atlanta, Ga.) topped the Shot Put competition with a 10.34m distance. First year Maya Sharar (Andover, Mass.) captured second with a 9.23m while classmate Maggie Berlinger (Ashby, Mass.) finished fifth with a distance of 8.85m. 

Junior Emily Brydges (Suffield, Conn.) broke a previous record in the 3000m, racing to a 10:30.64 for the second slot.

Francis and Sharar went 2-4 in the Weight Throw. Francis recorded a distance of 11.59m for second place while Sharar's 11.39m performance was a season-best.

In the 400m, senior Charlie Barron's (Chattanooga, Tenn.) 1:01.77 time took second and qualified for the New England DIII Championships.

Senior Erin Dickinson's (Papillion, Neb.) 10.70m distance in the Triple Jump not only earned third place, but qualified for New England DIII Championships. Junior Claire Peng (Chapel Hill, N.C.) finished fourth in the event, hitting the pit at 9.91m. Dickinson also put up a 4.99m mark in the Long Jump to finish second. Junior Sara Maeve Klingensmith (Chapel Hill, N.C.) added a point in fifth place with a distance of 4.67m. 

Peng later crossed fourth in the Indoor Mile with a personal-record time of 5:22.94. Senior Alicia Naranjo-Champion (El Monte, Calif.) was one spot behind with a PR time of 5:25.32.

Senior Merete Ogah (Austin, Texas) was the runner-up in the 60m, finishing in 8.18 seconds.

In the 60m Hurdles, senior Aoife Fitzgerald (Paxton, Mass.) ran an 11.13 to claim fourth place.

First year Leeya Rice (Closter, N.J.) captured fourth in the 600m, coming in at 1:46.75. Classmate Leah Willis (Mercersburg, Pa.) grabbed a point in the 1000m, with a time of 3:23.82 earning fourth.

First year Abigail Choi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) was the top performer in the 200m, placing fifth with a 29.02.

The Blue's 4x400m Relay team of Barron, Fitzgerald, Klingensmith, Ogah touched the finish line at 4:28.35 to earn bronze.

To meet conclude with the Distance Medley Relay. Willis, Peng, Rice, Whinney worked together to put up a time of 13:30.45 and grab second place.

Up next, the Blue has competitors at the New England DIII Championships at the TRACK at New Balance in Boston, Mass. on February 28-March 1.
