Husson Comes Back to Inch Past Wellesley Lacrosse 11-10 in Double Overtime

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Husson University won an 11-10 double-overtime nailbiter on a shot from first year Kate Boehmcke (Shelburne, Vt.) in a non-conference game with Wellesley College lacrosse on Saturday afternoon at Butler Stadium.

Boehmcke's goal was a fourth of the day for the Eagles (1-1). Junior Averi Baker (Farmingdale, Maine) posted a trio of goals and assists for the green and gold while sophomore Azabell Assaf (Augusta, Maine) tallied two goals. Boehmcke scooped a game-high nine ground balls and won six draw controls. Senior goalie Emma Beegz (Lewiston, Maine) stopped 11-of-21 shots on goal for Husson.

The Blue (1-1) were led by four goals and three assists by junior Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas). First year Charlotte Petersen-Kopman (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded a hat-trick, the first three goals of the career with the Blue. Senior Anna Tutek (Trumbull, Conn.) caused three turnovers and collected five grounders while first year Amelia Woodard (Montpelier, Vt.) won four draw controls. Classmate Aspen Caudill (Louisville, Ky.) stopped 14 shots while allowing 11 goals, good for a 56% save percentage.

An early fourth quarter goal from sophomore Mallory Kennison (Norway, Maine) put the Blue back up two. At 7:03, Tipton connected on a free position shot to make it 10-7 Wellesley. A late yellow card with just under four minutes remaining in the contest put Husson up a player. The Eagles used the opportunity to even the score in 95 seconds. Senior Jordyn Lengle (Concord, N.H.), Assaf and Boehmcke all tallied for the Eagles to knot the game up at 10-10. Neither team scored in the final two minutes of the game, forcing overtime.

In the first overtime, the Blue survived being two players down with staunch defense and a key free position save by Caudill. The second overtime appeared to be a similar stalemate, until Boehmcke gathered a ground ball with under 10 seconds remaining and put away a shot to seal the comeback.

Prior to the late game dramatics, Husson knocked in the first two goals of the game, courtesy of Boehmcke and Baker. Wellesley rattled off four goals in return to take a 4-2 advantage after 15 minutes of play. Petersen-Kopman found the net twice, while Tipton and senior Mila Rosenthal-Vincenti (Stony Brook, N.Y.) each scored once.

The Blue outscored the Eagles 2-1 in the second frame to take a 6-3 lead into the break. Another Boehmcke goal was countered by two from Tipton.

Tipton struck again to make it 7-3 Wellesley at the 13:55 mark of the third quarter. Husson halved its deficit with Assaf and Baker each converting on free position shots. Blue sophomore Katie McCabe (Jupiter, Fla.) briefly made it 8-5 Wellesley with a score before Baker and senior Natalie Whitten (Readfield, Maine) got the game within one goal at 8-7. The one-goal margin held throughout the final horn of the third period.

Wellesley concludes its four-game homestand versus Merchant Marine on Monday, March 10 at 4:00 PM. Husson will host its home opener against Bates College at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, March 4.
