ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Wellesley College golf posted a team score of 306 to sit in third place after day one of the 21st annual Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate Invitational. This year's 3-day tournament is being played at the par-72 King and Prince Golf Course.
The Blue opened the spring portion of their schedule against one of the toughest fields in Division III women's golf. The field includes 24 teams from 13 states with half of the field appearing in the latest Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) top-25 poll.
No. 1 Carnegie Mellon leads after day one with a 294 team score. No. 2 Emory is close behind in second place with a 297. The Blue are 12 strokes off the pace in third.
Sophomore Audrey Wang (Fremont, Calif.) led the way for Wellesley with a 3-over 75 on the 5,601-yard layout. Wang played the final 15 holes in even par with one birdie and one bogey.
Sophomore Sarah Yeh (Danville, Calif.) navigated the windy and cool conditions with a 76 (+4). Yeh also finished strong with six straight pars to close the round.
Sophomore Aileen Du (Auckland, New Zealand) came away with a 77 (+5). Du shot a 41 on the front and was even on the back with one birdie, a bogey and seven pars.
First-year Savannah Boyd (Shanghai, China) went out in 37, which included a couple of birdies, and came in with a 41 for a round of 78 (+6).
Sophomore Grace Sun (San Diego, Calif.) rounded out the five Blue golfers with an 82 (+10).
The Blue tee off for round two tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 PM.
Additionally, the Blue have four members playing at the individual invitational at the Par-72 Indian Mound Course. Sophomore Kaurvaki Bajpai (Chantilly, Va.) leads the 15-player field after shooting a round one score of 78. First-year Sophie Lim (Boston, Mass.) sits in second place with an 82. First-year Grace Yuan (Beijing, China) (86) and sophomore Sophia Lewis (Ventura, Calif.) (87) are in seventh and eighth, respectively.
